How to protect yourself from webcam spying: five simple steps | Kaspersky official blog
These days, it can feel like there’s a camera watching us from every corner: a video doorbell by the front door, a laptop webcam in the home office, an IP baby monitor in the children’s room, a smart TV with a camera and microphone in the bedroom, a robot vacuum with a navigation camera roaming around the house… Even a smart cat feeder could be spying on you! And any one of these cameras can easily become a useful tool for extortionists, blackmailers, or simply curious malicious actors. You don’t have to look far for examples. South Korea, late 2025: not one device, but 120,000 IP cameras were hacked . The criminals sold intimate footage and recordings of people’s everyday lives by subscription in private chats. In this article, we look at exactly where the threat comes from, and outline five rules that can greatly reduce your chances of becoming the star of a voyeur’s show. Real-life cases of surveillance Hotel porn by subscription Unfortunately, reports of miniature cameras being discovered in hotel rooms and rental apartments have become almost routine. Technically, these belong to a separate category of devices — “spy cameras” disguised as power outlets, smoke detectors, or alarm clocks. We’ll explain a little later how to detect them. Criminals don’t just publish footage from spy cameras — they even livestream it. Access to intimate videos, naturally, isn’t free. In some regions, criminals have built an entire infrastructure around spy cameras: some people install the cameras, others process the footage, while still others sell access through the dark web or messaging apps. Victims typically discover that there was a hidden camera in their hotel room purely by accident , after coming across videos of themselves on porn sites. Hunting motorists Another popular attack vector is hacking dashcams that can connect to the internet. These devices are tempting targets for attackers: their security is often weak, while the footage clearly shows license plates, road signs, and addresses on buildings. The recordings also contain detailed metadata, including exact dates, GPS coordinates, and more. This can allow criminals to identify a victim’s regular routes, determine where their car is parked, or even eavesdrop on conversations with passengers. There can be enough information for full-scale surveillance, car theft, or even blackmail if the camera records conversations and video inside the car. Stalking Not all stolen camera footage is the result of attacks by professional cybercriminals looking to profit from it. Sometimes, stalkers hack webcams to spy on specific people — often someone they know. For example, in 2025 a case came to light in which a man had been spying on his colleagues for years through their home IP cameras. All of the victims were women, who had no idea they were being watched. In another case, a man monitored his ex-wife and daughter through an intercom system and IP cameras. He made no attempt to hide the fact that he was spying on his own family, and even sent his daughter screenshots from the webcam. As a result, she eventually had to move away. Why does this happen? Neglecting basic cybersecurity rules This is probably the main reason IP cameras get hacked. Most users never change the factory-default passwords on their routers, smart devices, or the apps connected to them. Such passwords are essentially public knowledge. They often use simple combinations such as “admin/admin” or “root/1234”, which are known worldwide and can be guessed in a matter of seconds — no sophisticated algorithm is required. This is exactly what recently allowed attackers to hack 120,000 cameras in South Korea. Irresponsible camera manufacturers Even when manufacturers give assurances that camera data is stored only locally, in practice this is often far from the truth. For example, in 2022 researchers discovered that one popular range of video cameras sent snapshots to the manufacturer’s server every time a person appeared in the frame . And that wasn’t all: remote access to all cameras’ recordings was available through URLs generated in a predictable way — making them relatively easy to generate or guess. At the same time, the company claimed that its cameras used end-to-end encryption, stored recordings exclusively on the device, and didn’t transmit data to external servers. Incidentally, the supposedly “secure encryption” was implemented using a fixed key that was identical for every user. And the key itself could easily be found in the source code published by the manufacturer. In short, if a device has a lens and Wi-Fi, be prepared for the possibility that sooner or later a serious security flaw will be discovered in it. Search engines for vulnerable devices are becoming increasingly popular To access a camera, an attacker often only needs to know its IP address and try a handful of common passwords. There are search engines that index not websites, but devices and their open ports: webcams, routers, industrial controllers, medical equipment — you name it. If an IP camera requires no username and password, or is “protected” by the default “admin/admin” credentials, it may easily be discovered and added to the database of an OSINT service. Journalists and researchers have used such services to find publicly accessible cameras in children’s rooms, offices, hospital operating rooms, banks, and shops. So what can you do? What can you do at home or in a small office without a dedicated security team? These five simple recommendations can help. 1. Research the manufacturer When choosing an IP camera model, make sure you check whether cameras from that manufacturer have been hacked before — for example, by searching for “IP camera hack manufacturer name “. Then visit the Support section of the manufacturer’s website and check the date of the most recent firmware update both for the model you are considering and older models. If you find that firmware has not been updated for more than six months, or that updates are released irregularly, you may want to choose a different model. Most cameras run specialized embedded versions of Linux, and more than 2,300 vulnerabilities were recorded in the Linux kernel in the first six months of 2026 alone. If a manufacturer fails to update its firmware regularly, sooner or later a security hole is almost certain to appear in its cameras. Consider models from major manufacturers if you don’t want to end up with a whole collection of vulnerabilities and virtually no chance of them ever being patched. Cheap cameras from obscure companies with limited functionality and weak protection can ultimately cost you dearly. 2. Disable unnecessary features The fewer third-party cloud storage services involved in your surveillance system, the better. When choosing a camera, look for a microSD card slot, or support for a home network-attached storage device (NAS), so you can store all recordings locally. Ideally, the camera should be able to operate entirely within your local network without transmitting data to the cloud or the manufacturer’s servers — with viewing available over the LAN or through a secure connection  to your home or office. When buying other smart home appliances, consider whether you really need a built-in camera in, say, a smart TV, smart speaker , robot vacuum , or automatic pet feeder . Each and every one of these devices expands the potential attack surface. After buying an IP camera, go through its settings — usually available in the manufacturer’s app or through the camera’s web interface — and disable anything you don’t need. Pay attention to features related to person recognition, artificial intelligence, system permissions, discovery of other devices on the network, and cloud storage. If you don’t use a feature, feel free to disable it. In the network settings, make sure UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is disabled or even absent as an option. UPnP can allow the camera to make itself accessible to other devices over the internet. Check that P2P access to the webcam is disabled or unavailable, so that the camera does not connect to external servers and cannot be reached from the internet without your direct control. Make a habit of checking who’s logged into your account and who still has access to your recordings. If you gave a friend access to your webcam so they could keep an eye on your dog while you’re away, remember to remove any unnecessary sessions afterwards. And if you’ve recently ended a relationship, pay particularly close attention to whether an ex-partner still has access. For more on this, see Post-breakup digital hygiene: what to check and shut down . 3. Change the default settings Factory-default passwords have been known to attackers for years. If you haven’t changed the username and password for your router or IP camera, an attacker may be able to gain access in a matter of seconds. Replace your router’s factory-default username and password with unique, long credentials. You can do this through the router’s web interface — we explain how to access it below. To generate and store strong, unique passwords, we recommend using Kaspersky Password Manager . If your camera is linked to an account on a website or in an app, make sure you use a strong password there too, and enable two-factor authentication or passkey authentication whenever possible. By the way, both 2FA tokens and passkeys can also be stored in Kaspersky Password Manager  and synchronized across all your devices. Update the firmware on both your router and IP camera to the latest versions, even if you just bought the device, and make regular updates a habit. Large-scale IP camera hacking campaigns often exploit long-known vulnerabilities that can only be fixed by installing updates. 4. Put all cameras and smart devices on a separate Wi-Fi segment We recommend segmenting your home Wi-Fi into separate subnets. You’ve probably encountered this arrangement in cafés, which often have one Wi-Fi network for staff and another for guests. All IP cameras and other smart home gadgets should ideally be moved to a separate Wi-Fi network and completely isolated from laptops, phones, and other work devices. Better still, IP cameras should be isolated from all other devices by creating a dedicated Wi-Fi network specifically for them. Most modern routers allow you to create at least two Wi-Fi networks — a primary network and a guest network — while more advanced models can support more. That way, even if your camera is hacked, the attacker won’t be able to reach your other devices or access sensitive files. How to open your router’s web interface Enter the router’s IP address in your browser’s address bar. It is usually printed on a label on the bottom of the router. Common IP addresses for home routers include 168.0.1 , 192.168.1.1 , and 10.0.0.1. Sign in on the page that opens. Most routers have a default username and password, which are usually also printed on the same label. Some routers may ask you to create your own username and password. We recommend choosing a strong one and storing it in Kaspersky Password Manager . Factory-default passwords have long been known to attackers, and if you don’t change your router password, they may be able to get into your home network with ease. Open the settings and look for sections related to Wi-Fi segmentation or the creation of subnets or guest networks. For detailed setup instructions, consult your router’s manual or the support section of the manufacturer’s website. For more advice on protecting your smart home, see our post How to secure your smart home . 5. Learn how to detect hidden cameras — both at home and while traveling Our final set of recommendations is not about configuring the camera itself, but about good security hygiene. Make a habit of checking the client list on your router. If you see an unknown device with a strange name or MAC address, investigate what it is and why it’s connected to your home network. Our security solution  includes a dedicated Smart Home Monitor component . This feature can alert you when a new device connects to your home wired or wireless network, provide simple recommendations for improving home network security, and identify weak router passwords and insecure encryption. When traveling, we recommend checking hotel rooms and rental properties for hidden recording devices: inspect places that offer a “convenient” view of the room, such as ventilation grilles, smoke detectors, power outlets, and decorative objects; in the dark, use your smartphone as an improvised optical detector: turn on the flashlight and camera, slowly scan the room, and look for distinctive reflections from a camera lens; use the front-facing camera to look for infrared light sources that are invisible to the human eye — this can help you spot the IR illumination used for “night vision”. Plug and Pwn attack uses fake USB devices for Windows SYSTEM access
Security researchers have disclosed new "Plug and Pwn" attacks that abuse the Windows Plug and Play feature to trigger Windows into installing vulnerable or insecure vendor software and gain SYSTEM privileges. The research, presented at DEF CON 34 by security researchers Alejandro Hernando and Borja Martínez, exploits how Windows automatically identifies new connected hardware, locates matching driver packages, and installs vendor software as the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM account. By using software to emulate USB devices, the researchers found they could force Windows to install signed vendor packages containing exploitable components or weaknesses that can be abused to gain SYSTEM privileges. Some of the demonstrated attacks require no user interaction or logged-in user, while another can be performed remotely over RDP without any physical USB hardware being connected to the targeted computer. plugandpwn.com. Abusing Windows Plug and Play Windows supports a feature called co-installers, which automatically downloads and installs vendor software and drivers when a new USB device is inserted into a computer. In 2021, BleepingComputer reported on how this feature was abused along with a Razer Synapse vulnerability to give a standard Windows user SYSTEM privileges simply by plugging in a Razer mouse or keyboard. When a Razer device was connected, Windows automatically downloaded and launched the Razer Synapse installer with SYSTEM privileges. A flaw in the installer allowed a standard user to launch PowerShell from the installation interface, causing the shell to inherit the installer's privileges. BleepingComputer tested the vulnerability at the time and confirmed that it could be used to gain SYSTEM privileges in approximately two minutes. At the time, vulnerability analyst Will Dormann previously warned that similar vulnerabilities were likely present in other software automatically installed through Windows Plug and Play. Hernando told BleepingComputer that Plug and Pwn belongs to the same family of attacks, but the new research focuses more on the Windows device installation path itself. "The Razer bug is the same family. The difference is that we went after the install path itself instead of one vendor's installer," Hernando told BleepingComputer. "Some of our chains need no clicks and no logged-on session, and one of them runs over RDP with no hardware at all." The researchers say the main issue is that when Windows detects new hardware, it may automatically retrieve an associated signed package and execute vendor-supplied components as SYSTEM. This privileged installation path can include co-installers, services, support executables, and drivers, with no UAC prompt displayed by the operating system. From fake USB devices to remote RDP attacks The researchers told BleepingComputer that they used FaceDancer with Cynthion and GreatFET hardware connected to a small Linux computer to emulate USB devices. FaceDancer is a software framework for emulating USB devices, allowing researchers to define the descriptors, interfaces, device classes, and endpoints that a computer uses to identify connected devices. Connecting hardware running FaceDancer to a computer can make the operating system behave as though a specific USB device had been plugged in. Using FaceDancer, the researchers could make their hardware appear to Windows as specific USB devices, causing the operating system to recognize the emulated hardware and locate and install the associated vendor driver packages. Some attack chains also require the emulated device to disconnect and then reappear as a different device identity. "Several of our chains depend on presenting the device as composite so Windows loads usbccgp.sys and enumerates each interface on its own, which is what makes it match the vendor package instead of the inbox driver," Hernando explained to BleepingComputer. "We also need to re-enumerate on demand, dropping the device and coming back as a different identity." In their zero-click physical demonstration, the researchers exploited behavior in Sierra Wireless and Sony FeliCa installation packages. The attack first impersonates a Sierra Wireless device, causing Windows to install software that can be abused to change the computer's DNS settings. The researchers then impersonate a Sony FeliCa device, which causes Windows to install additional Sony software that downloads files over an unencrypted connection. By controlling the system's DNS settings, the researchers can redirect those downloads to a server they control and exploit a flaw in the Sony software to place a malicious file on the system with SYSTEM privileges. Finally, they impersonate the Sierra device again, causing Windows to load the malicious file and allow the attackers to open a reverse shell with SYSTEM privileges. The researchers demonstrated this chain against a fully updated Windows 11 computer with nobody logged in, saying the complete attack takes approximately five minutes. When questioned if this attack can be conducted with small portable devices, Hernando said their research hardware is already portable enough to carry around and that a Raspberry Pi operating in USB gadget mode should theoretically be capable of conducting this attack as well. However, he said the Flipper Zero cannot currently perform the FaceDancer attacks. "Flipper Zero, no. There's no FaceDancer backend for it and the framework won't run on it," Hernando said. "Its BadUSB mode is fine for HID, but arbitrary composite descriptors and re-enumeration would be a firmware project." The researchers also demonstrated what they call "NoPlug & Pwn," which requires no physical hardware emulation. Instead, the attack abuses RDP USB redirection, a feature that allows USB devices attached to a user's local computer to be available inside a remote Windows session. Rather than redirecting an actual device, the researchers created a Python RDP client that sends specific USB descriptors over this USB redirection feature when connecting over RDP. The remote Windows host then treats the fake descriptors as a legitimate USB device connected to the guest computer, creates the corresponding Plug and Play device on the host, causing the corresponding drivers and vendor software to be installed. In the researchers' demonstration, they impersonated an Intel RealSense camera whose Windows Update package contains a co-installer that can be abused through DLL hijacking to obtain SYSTEM privileges. "The server's USB hub driver enumerates our phantom device, and Windows PnP does exactly what it did in the physical demo: it matches the hardware ID and installs the driver, as SYSTEM," the researchers explain on the Plug and Pwn site. The RDP attack only works on systems where USB redirection is enabled, which Hernando says is common in virtual desktop environments. Disabling co-installers helps, but does not stop Plug and Pwn Will Dormann suggested that Windows administrators concerned about this type of attack can enable the 'DisableCoInstallers' registry value, which prevents driver packages from executing co-installers during device installation. To do this, open the Registry Editor and navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Device Installer Registry key. Under that key, add a DWORD-32 value named DisableCoInstallers and set it to 1, as shown below. When BleepingComputer asked whether this would effectively block Plug and Pwn, Hernando said it would disrupt some of the demonstrated attacks, including the Sony FeliCa attack and the Intel RealSense RDP attack. However, it does not eliminate the underlying attack surface. "It helps, and it would break parts of what we showed," Hernando told BleepingComputer. "It doesn't stop the class of attack, though. It leaves PnP enumeration, Windows Update resolution, driver staging, INF processing and INF-installed services untouched." The researchers illustrated this with another attack using Wacom and Atheros packages that exploits a vulnerability (CVE-2019-10617) in an Atheros driver service installed through an INF file rather than a co-installer. Hernando recommends that organizations with sensitive systems use 'DisableCoInstallers' along with additional device blocking. "In anything sensitive I'd pair it with device installation restrictions or hardware-ID allow-lists, and turn off PnP device redirection on RDP and VDI hosts that don't need it (fDisablePNPRedir)," Hernando told BleepingComputer. The researchers have not reported all of the attack scenarios as new vulnerabilities to individual vendors, saying that many are not standalone security flaws and only become exploitable when combined with other functionality. Overall prevention scores can hide what happens after initial access. Once attackers are using valid credentials, prevention drops sharply. Researchers Turn USB Auto-Install Into a Full SYSTEM Takeover on Windows 11
Windows Plug and Play can be abused to fetch signed vendor software for an emulated USB device and execute privileged installation components that researchers chained to SYSTEM access on a fully updated Windows 11 machine. The same PnP path can be triggered over Remote Desktop without physical hardware when supported Plug and Play or low-level USB redirection is enabled; Microsoft says that redirection is not allowed by default. Security researchers Alejandro Hernando and Borja Martinez described the technique in "Plug And Pwn: Weaponizing Windows PnP Auto-Install," research prepared for DEF CON 34. They built tooling to emulate arbitrary USB devices and said that, under the required conditions, an unprivileged user can turn the PnP installation path into SYSTEM code execution. Microsoft's own driver documentation describes the underlying selection step: Windows receives hardware and compatible IDs for a device and uses them to find a matching driver package. According to the researchers, the physical chain starts by emulating a Sierra Wireless device so Windows installs SwiService.exe, a SYSTEM service exposing a SetDNS primitive. They use it to redirect DNS, then emulate a Sony FeliCa reader whose co-installer retrieves configuration files over plaintext HTTP and derives local filenames from URL paths. The researchers say a path-traversal flaw lets them place a DLL in System32; reconnecting the Sierra device then loads the planted DLL and yields SYSTEM. Their disclosed demonstration used a fully updated Windows 11 system, so the result should not be generalized to an untested Windows version range. The remote variant replaces the physical device with synthetic USB traffic over RDP. The researchers' Python client forges a USB identity and presents a phantom Intel RealSense device, causing Windows to follow the redirected device-installation path. They say the resulting RealSense software can be abused through a CRYPTBASE.dll search-order hijack from a user-writable installation directory, giving the authenticated low-privilege user SYSTEM code execution. Microsoft separately documents that redirected low-level USB peripherals use the same driver-installation process as a physical Windows computer. The remote path is configuration-dependent, not a default Windows exposure. Microsoft says Remote Desktop Services does not allow supported Plug and Play and RemoteFX USB redirection by default, and its USB-redirection guidance requires Plug and Play redirection to be enabled before low-level USB forwarding works. Administrators that do not need the feature can leave it disabled. Microsoft also provides device-installation restrictions that can allow or block devices by hardware or compatible ID, device-instance ID, and setup class; on a Remote Desktop server, those policies can also affect redirected devices. The physical chain has its own precondition: an attacker has to be able to present an emulated USB device to the target machine. The research demonstrates abuse of a legitimate privileged installation path combined with weaknesses in signed third-party packages. The vendor-specific Sierra, Sony, and Intel exploit mechanics remain researcher findings and should stay attributed unless matching vendor material independently confirms them.

New Dysphoria DDoS botnet spreads to 200k devices worldwide
A botnet called Dysphoria has compromised around 200,000 devices across the world and is using them for distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and traffic relay operations. According to QiAnXin XLab cybersecurity researchers, Dysphoria evolved from the ‘jackskid’ and ‘fbot' malware by adding a covert blockchain-based command-and-control (C2) resolution mechanism. Specifically, the botnet uses Ethereum ENS and Solana SNS domains to retrieve infrastructure information, while C2 addresses are concealed inside fake IPv6 strings and recovered using a custom byte-transformation algorithm. The researchers first spotted Dysphoria on March 25 and identified multiple iterations that added meaningful updates, such as a C2 acquisition algorithm, multi-chain support, new domains, and functional separation between the relaying and DDoS variants. “Since the first quarter of 2026, XLAB has continuously tracked an emerging botnet family named Dysphoria, whose bot count exceeds 200,000,” reads XLab's report. “In just a few months, the family has undergone frequent variant updates and technical iterations, demonstrating extremely strong resilience.” The use of blockchain in C2 operations makes the overall infrastructure harder to trace and dismantle. Based on the researchers' analysis, infected clients send a fixed 78-byte login and heartbeat packet back to the C2 and receive from the operator DDoS attack commands that include duration, type, targets, and configurable flags. In late June, XLab observed a variant that focused only on transforming infected devices into network proxies, and completely discarded the DDoS functionality. The malware abuses UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) on the compromised device to create 155 port forwarding rules to expose internal services to inbound internet connections. XLab's report notes that the botnet spreads through weak Telnet and SSH credentials and known vulnerabilities in routers, cameras, and various IoT devices. Among the more recent flaws exploited are CVE-2025-55182 (“React2Shell”), CVE-2025-34152, CVE-2025-28137 (Totolink), and CVE-2025-9528 (Linksys). However, Dysphoria also targets older weaknesses that still persist in many devices, like CVE-2017-17215 (Huawei) and CVE-2020-8515 (DrayTek). XLab monitored the botnet between July 14 and 20 and recorded a peak of 740,000 daily pings from infected hosts, 239,000 connections from overseas clients, and 1,800 from China. The researchers confidently estimate that the number of infected devices is around 200,000 at this time. Concerning the botnet’s firepower, its operators claim a maximum DDoS capacity of 4 Tbps on their clearnet site, which promotes the service as a legitimate stress-tester. Despite being significantly lower than the current record figure of 31.4 Tbps achieved by the Aisuru/Kimwolf botnet in December 2025, it is still enough to cause notable disruptions. Users can protect against botnet infections by keeping their devices’ firmware up to date, changing the default administrator password, disabling remote access if not necessary, and strengthening the security settings where available/possible. Overall prevention scores can hide what happens after initial access. Once attackers are using valid credentials, prevention drops sharply. Aggiornamenti Mensili Microsoft
NCSC-2026-0181 [1.00] [H/H] Kwetsbaarheden verholpen in Microsoft Windows

Startup Airrived this week announced emerging from stealth mode with $6.1 million in seed funding to help organizations unify cybersecurity, IT, and business operations through agentic AI. Founded in 2024, the Dublin, California-based firm has built an Agentic operating system (Agentic OS) meant to unify fragmented AI tools across large enterprises’ ecosystems. According to Airrived, its platform was designed to provide agentic intelligence as an OS, not a feature, unifying enterprise domains such as IAM, IT, GRC, SOC, vulnerability management, and business operations. Airrived’s Agentic OS enables organizations to fine-tune LLMs, build deep-reasoning agents, and orchestrate intelligence across assets. The solution, it says, is built for production, governance, and scale. It removes dependence on scarce AI specialists and delivers AI that reasons, decides, and acts autonomously. Airrived says its Agentic OS is already used by large enterprises, including a Fortune 150 company in the insurance sector, a restaurant chain, a global bank, and a telecommunications firm. The startup’s seed funding round was led by Cannage Capital, with additional support from Inner Loop Capital, Plug and Play Ventures, Rebellion Ventures, and angel investors. “Airrived stood out because of its agentic-first architecture. This isn’t automation or scripted playbooks—it’s a composable agentic platform designed to scale across use cases,” Cannage Capital founder and managing partner Shelley Zhuang said. New Atroposia malware comes with a local vulnerability scanner
A new malware-as-a-service (MaaS) platform named Atroposia provides cybercriminals a remote access trojan that combines capabilities for persistent access, evasion, data theft, and local vulnerability scanning. The malware is available for a $200 monthly subscription that unlocks advanced features such as hidden remote desktop, file system control, data exfiltration, clipboard theft, credential theft, cryptocurrency wallet theft, and DNS hijacking. Atroposia was discovered by researchers at data security company Varonis, who warned that it’s the latest example of an easy-to-use, affordable “plug and play” toolkit, alongside SpamGPT and MatrixPDF. Atroposia overview Atroposia is a modular RAT that communicates with its command-and-control (C2) infrastructure over encrypted channels and can bypass the User Account Control (UAC) protection to increase privileges privilege on Windows systems. According to the researchers, it can maintain persistent, stealthy access on infected hosts, and its main capabilities include: HRDP Connect module that spawns a covert desktop session in the background, allowing an attacker to open apps, view documents and email, and interact with the user’s session without any visible indication. Varonis says standard remote-access monitoring can fail to detect it. Explorer-style file manager that allows remote file browsing copying, deleting, and execution capabilities. A grabber component looks for specific files, filtering them based on extension or a keyword, compresses the data into password-protected ZIP archives, and exfiltrates it using in-memory techniques to minimize traces. Stealer module targets saved logins, crypto wallets, and chat files, while a clipboard manager captures everything copied in real time (passwords, API keys, wallet addresses) and presents a history to the attacker. Host-level DNS hijack module that maps domains to attacker IPs so the victim is silently routed to rogue servers, enabling phishing, MITM, fake updates, ad or malware injection, and DNS-based exfiltration. Built-in local vulnerability scanner that audits missing patches, unsafe settings, and vulnerable software, returning a score that allows attackers to prioritize exploits, demonstrating the RAT’s modular, plugin-based workflow. The researchers say that the vulnerability check "is dangerous in corporate environments because the malware might find an outdated VPN client or an unpatched privilege escalation bug." This can be easily used to gain deeper access. Varonis' researchers say the module checks for missing patches, insecure settings, and outdated software versions. The function may also be used to find nearby systems that can be exploited. The emergence of Atroposia adds yet another MaaS option for cybercriminals, lowering the technical barrier and enabling low-skilled threat actors to execute effective campaigns. To mitigate the risk, users are advised to download software only from official sites and reputable sources, avoid pirated software and torrents, skip promoted search results, and never execute commands they find online that they don’t understand. Overall prevention scores can hide what happens after initial access. Once attackers are using valid credentials, prevention drops sharply.
