Zimbra Patches Critical SNMP Command Injection and Four XSS Vulnerabilities
Zimbra has rolled out fixes to address multiple critical security issues, including a command injection flaw in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) monitoring component. As many as nine security vulnerabilities have been patched in Zimbra 10.1.20. Topping the list is a command injection vulnerability in the SNMP monitoring component when SNMP notifications are enabled. Also patched are four cross-site scripting (XSS) flaws in the Classic Web Client - A stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability that could allow malicious attachment filenames to execute script under specific conditions. An XSS vulnerability where crafted fields could execute a malicious script under specific conditions. An XSS vulnerability where a crafted field could execute a malicious script when rendered. An XSS vulnerability where crafted attachments could execute a malicious script when rendered. Separately, fixes have been released for a mail forwarding restriction bypass (CVE-2026-50055) that could allow authenticated users to exfiltrate email despite mail forwarding restrictions being enabled. Rapid7 security researcher Jonah Burgess has been credited with discovering and reporting the flaw. The company did not share any additional specifics, stating "in line with industry best practices, information disclosure is limited for security vulnerability fixes." The release comes a little over a week after Zimbra patched a critical stored XSS flaw in the Classic Web Client that could result in arbitrary code execution. Although none of the identified vulnerabilities have been flagged as actively exploited, XSS bugs in the email software have been repeatedly exploited by bad actors in the past, making it crucial that customers apply the updates to keep the environment secure.

Russian State Hackers Target Vulnerable Routers Worldwide, Joint Advisory Warns
Cybersecurity agencies from 12 countries have issued a fresh warning that a Russian state-sponsored cyber unit is actively targeting vulnerable routers worldwide. The joint advisory detailed how Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Center 16 cyber actors have been observed hunting for vulnerable routers by scanning the internet for devices that still use default or weak Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) passwords and community strings. Center 16 is also known as Berserk Bear, Energetic Bear, Crouching Yeti, Dragonfly, Ghost Blizzard and Static Tundra. Sectors most at risk from this global targeting, including communications, defence, energy, financial services, government and healthcare, are being urged to take action. This includes using SNMPv3, as it provides built-in authentication and encryption capabilities that help protect management traffic from interception and tampering. SNMPv1 and SNMPv2 rely on community strings transmitted in plaintext, making them vulnerable to network sniffing. If an attacker obtains a valid community string and gains successful SNMP access, they can use Object Identifiers (OIDs) to command the router to copy its configurations and send it via Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP). These exfiltrated files are then sent to a virtual private server leased by the threat actor or a compromised file transfer protocol server. As well as hunting for vulnerable routers via scanning for weak SNMP passwords and community strings, the Russian threat actor has also been known to occasionally exploit common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs) in Cisco devices. In 2025, Cisco warned that a seven-year-old vulnerability (CVE-2018-0171) in the Smart Install feature of unpatched, often end-of-life Cisco devices, was being exploited by Center 16/Static Tundra. Customers were urged to apply the patch for CVE-2018-0171 or to disable Smart Install if patching is not an option. The patch was first issued in 2018. The joint security advisory noted that many of the TTPs used by this Russian threat actor overlaps with that of other groups, such as China-linked group Slat Typhoon. The advisory has been co-authored by agencies from Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, the UK and US. EU, UK Blame Center 16 for Poland’s Energy Grid Cyber-Attack At the same time as the publication of the joint advisory, the coordinated cyber-attacks which targeted Poland’s energy infrastructure in late 2025 have been officially attributed to FSB Center 16 by the UK and European Union (EU). In a statement issued on July 13, the UK government said: “This reckless attack failed but could have caused 500,000 citizens to lose electricity in the depths of winter. It is another example of the Russian state’s irresponsible attempts to sow chaos across Europe.” The EU and UK have also issued a joint sanctions package targeting 24 individuals and entities behind the destructive cyber and hybrid operations including cybercriminals involved in proxy networks linked to the Russian Intelligence Services. The UK is also sanctioning individuals behind Lumma Stealer. The UK government said that Russia has used Lumma Stealer’s stolen credentials to conduct cyber espionage operations against targets globally to support the Kremlin’s objectives. According to the National Crime Agency, within the last six months, there have been at least 2100 Lumma Stealer victims in the UK.

The Zero-Day Scramble is Avoidable: A Guide to Attack Surface Reduction
You can't control when the next critical vulnerability drops. You can control how much of your environment is exposed when it does. The problem is that most teams have more internet-facing exposure than they realise. Intruder's Head of Security digs into why this happens and how teams can manage it deliberately. Time-to-exploit is shrinking The larger and less controlled your attack surface is, the more opportunities exist for exploitation. And the window to act on them is shrinking fast. For the most serious vulnerabilities, disclosure to exploitation can be as short as 24 to 48 hours. Zero Day Clock projects that time-to-exploit will be just minutes by 2028. That's not a lot of time when you consider what has to happen before a patch is deployed: running scans, waiting for results, raising tickets, agreeing priorities, implementing applies to ’the fix’ too, happy to drop ‘verifying’ if that’s easier. If disclosure lands out of hours, it takes even longer. In many cases, vulnerable systems don’t need to be internet-facing in the first place. With visibility of the attack surface, teams can reduce unnecessary exposure upfront and avoid the scramble altogether when a new vulnerability drops. When a zero-day drops on a Saturday ToolShell was an unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft SharePoint. If an attacker could reach it, they could run code on your server - and because SharePoint is Active Directory-connected, they'd be starting in a highly sensitive part of your environment. This was a zero-day, meaning attackers were exploiting it before a patch was available. Microsoft disclosed on a Saturday and confirmed that Chinese state-sponsored groups had been exploiting it for up to two weeks before that. By the time most teams knew about it, opportunistic attackers were scanning for exposed instances and exploiting at scale. Intruder’s research found thousands of publicly accessible SharePoint instances at the time of disclosure - despite the fact that SharePoint doesn't need to be internet-facing. Every one of those exposures was unnecessary - and every unpatched server was an open door. Why exposures get missed So why do exposures so often get missed by security teams? In a typical external scan, informational findings sit beneath hundreds of criticals, highs, mediums, and lows. But that information can include detections that represent real exposure risk, such as: An exposed SharePoint server A database exposed to the internet, such as MySQL or Postgres Other protocols, which should usually be reserved for the internal network, such as RDP and SNMP Here’s a real example of what that looks like: In vulnerability scanning terms, classifying these as informationals sometimes makes sense. If the scanner sits on the same private subnet as the targets, an exposed service might genuinely be low risk. But when that same service is exposed to the internet, it carries real risk even without a known vulnerability attached to it. Yet. The danger is that traditional scan reports treat both cases the same way, so the real risks slip through the gaps. What proactive attack surface reduction actually involves There are three key elements to making attack surface reduction work in practice. 1. Asset discovery: define your attack surface Before you can reduce your attack surface, you need a clear picture of what you own and what's externally reachable. That starts with identifying shadow IT - systems your organization owns or operates but isn't currently scanning or monitoring. Closing that gap is important, and there are three key elements we recommend having in place: Integrating with your cloud and DNS providers so that when new infrastructure is created, it's automatically picked up and scanned. This is one area where defenders have a genuine advantage: you can integrate directly with your own environments, attackers can't. Using subdomain enumeration to surface externally reachable hosts that aren't in your inventory. This matters especially after acquisitions, where you may be inheriting infrastructure you don't yet have visibility of. Identifying infrastructure hosted with smaller, unknown cloud providers. You may have a security policy that mandates development teams only use your primary cloud provider, but you need to check that practice is being followed. Watch a deep dive into these techniques: 2. Treat exposure as risk The next step is treating attack surface exposure as a risk category in its own right. That requires a detection capability that identifies which informational findings represent an exposure and assigns appropriate severity. An exposed SharePoint instance, for example, might reasonably be treated as a medium-risk issue. It also means carving out space for this work in how you prioritize. If strategic efforts like attack surface reduction are always competing against urgent patching, they will always lose. That might mean setting aside time each quarter to review and reduce exposure, or assigning clear ownership so someone is accountable for it - not just when a crisis hits, but routinely. 3. Continuous monitoring Attack surface reduction isn't a one-time exercise. Exposure changes constantly - a firewall rule gets edited, a new service gets deployed, a subdomain gets forgotten - and your team needs to detect those changes quickly. Vulnerability scans take time to complete, and running full scans daily isn't usually possible. Daily port scanning is a better fit. It's lightweight, fast, and means you can detect newly exposed services as they appear. If someone edits a firewall rule and accidentally exposes Remote Desktop, you find out the day it happens - not at the next scheduled scan, which could be up to a month later. Fewer exposed services, fewer surprises When unnecessary services aren't exposed in the first place, they're far less likely to be caught up in the mass exploitation that follows a critical disclosure. That means fewer surprises, less urgent scrambling, and more time to respond deliberately when new vulnerabilities emerge. Intruder automates this process - from discovering shadow IT and monitoring for new exposures, to alerting your team the moment something changes - so your security team can stay ahead of exposure rather than reacting to it. If you want to see what's exposed in your environment, book a demo of Intruder.

⚡ Weekly Recap: F5 Breached, Linux Rootkits, Pixnapping Attack, EtherHiding & More
It’s easy to think your defenses are solid — until you realize attackers have been inside them the whole time. The latest incidents show that long-term, silent breaches are becoming the norm. The best defense now isn’t just patching fast, but watching smarter and staying alert for what you don’t expect. Here’s a quick look at this week’s top threats, new tactics, and security stories shaping the landscape. ⚡ Threat of the Week F5 Exposed to Nation-State Breach — F5 disclosed that unidentified threat actors broke into its systems and stole files containing some of BIG-IP's source code and information related to undisclosed vulnerabilities in the product. The company said it learned of the incident on August 9, 2025, although it's believed that the attackers were in its network for at least 12 months. The attackers are said to have used a malware family called BRICKSTORM, which is attributed to a China-nexus espionage group dubbed UNC5221. GreyNoise said it observed elevated scanning activity targeting BIG-IP in three waves on September 23, October 14, and October 15, 2025, but emphasized the anomalies may not necessarily relate to the hack. Censys said it identified over 680,000 F5 BIG-IP load balancers and application gateways visible on the public internet, with the majority of hosts located in the U.S., followed by Germany, France, Japan, and China. Not all identified systems are necessarily vulnerable, but each represents a publicly accessible interface that should be inventoried, access-restricted, and patched proactively as a precautionary measure. "Edge infrastructure and security vendors remain prime targets for long-term, often state-linked threat actors," John Fokker, vice president of threat intelligence strategy at Trellix, said. "Over the years, we have seen nation-state interest in exploiting vulnerabilities in edge devices, recognizing their strategic position in global networks. Incidents like these remind us that strengthening collective resilience requires not only hardened technology but also open collaboration and intelligence sharing across the security community." Zero Trust + AI: Thrive in the AI Era and Empower Your Workforce It’s no surprise, hackers are using AI in creative ways to compromise users and breach organizations. Zscaler Zero Trust + AI helps defeat ransomware and AI-power attacks today by enabling you to detect and block advanced threats, and discover and classify sensitive data everywhere. Learn more about Zscaler Zero Trust + AI ➝ 🔔 Top News N. Korea Uses EtherHiding to Hide Malware Inside Blockchain Smart Contracts — North Korean threat actors have been observed leveraging the EtherHiding technique to distribute malware and enable cryptocurrency theft, marking the first time a state-sponsored hacking group has embraced the method. The activity has been attributed to a cluster tracked as UNC5342 (aka Famous Chollima). The attack wave is part of a long-running campaign codenamed Contagious Interview, wherein the attackers approach potential targets on LinkedIn by posing as recruiters or hiring managers, and trick them into running malicious code under the pretext of a job assessment after shifting the conversation to Telegram or Discord. In the latest attack waves observed since February 2025, the threat actors use a JavaScript downloader that interacts with a malicious BSC smart contract to download JADESNOW, which subsequently queries the transaction history associated with an Ethereum address to fetch the JavaScript version of InvisibleFerret. LinkPro Linux Rootkit Spotted in the Wild — An investigation into the compromise of an Amazon Web Services (AWS)-hosted infrastructure led to the discovery of a new GNU/Linux rootkit dubbed LinkPro. The backdoor features functionalities relying on the installation of two extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) modules to conceal itself and to be remotely activated upon receiving a magic packet - a TCP SYN packet with a specific window size (54321) that signals the rootkit to await further instructions within a one-hour window, allowing it to evade traditional security defenses. The commands supported by LinkPro include executing /bin/bash in a pseudo-terminal, running a shell command, enumerating files and directories, performing file operations, downloading files, and setting up a SOCKS5 proxy tunnel. It's currently not known who is behind the attack, but it's suspected that the threat actors are financially motivated. Zero Disco Campaign Targets Cisco Devices with Rootkits — A new campaign has exploited a recently disclosed security flaw impacting Cisco IOS Software and IOS XE Software to deploy Linux rootkits on older, unprotected systems. The activity, codenamed Operation Zero Disco by Trend Micro, involves the weaponization of CVE-2025-20352 (CVSS score: 7.7), a stack overflow vulnerability in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) subsystem that could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code by sending crafted SNMP packets to a susceptible device. The operation primarily impacted Cisco 9400, 9300, and legacy 3750G series devices, Trend Micro said. The intrusions have not been attributed to any known threat actor or group. Pixnapping Attack Leads to Data Theft on Android Devices — Android devices from Google and Samsung have been found vulnerable to a side-channel attack that could be exploited to covertly steal two-factor authentication (2FA) codes, Google Maps timelines, and other sensitive data without the users' knowledge pixel-by-pixel. The attack has been codenamed Pixnapping. Google is tracking the issue under the CVE identifier CVE-2025-48561 (CVSS score: 5.5). Patches for the vulnerability were issued by the tech giant as part of its September 2025 Android Security Bulletin, with additional fixes forthcoming in December. Chinese Threat Actors Exploited ArcGIS Server as Backdoor — Threat actors with ties to China have been attributed to a novel campaign that compromised an ArcGIS system and turned it into a backdoor for more than a year. The activity is the handiwork of a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group called Flax Typhoon, which is also tracked as Ethereal Panda and RedJuliett. "The group cleverly modified a geo-mapping application's Java server object extension (SOE) into a functioning web shell," ReliaQuest said. "By gating access with a hardcoded key for exclusive control and embedding it in system backups, they achieved deep, long-term persistence that could survive a full system recovery." The attack chain involved the threat actors targeting a public-facing ArcGIS server that was linked to a private, internal ArcGIS server by compromising a portal administrator account to deploy a malicious SOE, thereby allowing them to blend in with normal traffic and maintain access for extended periods. The attackers then instructed the public-facing server to create a hidden directory to serve as the group's "private workspace." They also blocked access to other attackers and admins with a hard-coded key. The findings demonstrate Flax Typhoon's consistent modus operandi of quietly turning an organization's own tools against itself rather than using sophisticated malware or exploits. ️🔥 Trending CVEs Hackers move fast. The company also noted that it's taking steps to secure AI-powered agentic experiences on the operating system by ensuring that they operate with limited permissions and only obtain access to resources users' explicitly provide permission to. In addition, Microsoft said agents that integrate with Windows must be cryptographically signed by a trusted source so that they can be revoked if found to be malicious. Each AI agent will also run under its own dedicated agent account that's distinct from the user account on the device. "This facilitates agent-specific policy application that can be different from the rules applied to other accounts like those for human users," it said. SEO Campaign Uses Fake Ivanti Installers to Steal Credentials — A new attack campaign has leveraged SEO poisoning to lure users into downloading a malicious version of the Ivanti Pulse Secure VPN client. The activity targets users searching for legitimate software on search engines like Bing, redirecting them to attacker-controlled lookalike websites (ivanti-pulsesecure[.]com or ivanti-secure-access[.]org). The goal of this attack is to steal VPN credentials from the victim's machine, enabling further compromise. "The malicious installer, a signed MSI file, contains a credential-stealing DLL designed to locate, parse, and exfiltrate VPN connection details," Zscaler said. "The malware specifically targets the connectionstore.dat file to steal saved VPN server URIs, which it combines with hardcoded credentials for exfiltration. Data is sent to a command-and-control (C2) server hosted on Microsoft Azure infrastructure." Qilin's Ties with BPH Providers Exposed — Cybersecurity researchers from Resecurity examined Qilin ransomware group's "close affiliation" with underground bulletproof hosting (BPH) operators, finding that the e-crime actor has not only relied on Cat Technologies Co. Limited. (which, in turn, is hosted on an IP address tied to Aeza Group) for hosting its data leak site, but also advertised services like BEARHOST Servers (aka Underground) on its WikiLeaksV2 site, where the group publishes content about their activities. BEARHOST has been operational since 2016, offering its services for anywhere from $95 to $500. While BEARHOST abruptly announced the stoppage of its service on December 28, 2024, it is assessed that the threat actors have taken the BPH service into private mode, catering only to trusted and vetted underground actors. On May 8, 2025, it resurfaced as Voodoo Servers, only for the operators to terminate the service again towards the end of the month, citing political reasons. "The actors decided to disappear through an 'exit scam' scenario, keeping the underground audience completely clueless," Resecurity said. "Notably, the legal entities behind the service continue their operations." Notably, Cat Technologies Co. Limited. also shares links to shadowy entities like Red Bytes LLC, Hostway, Starcrecium Limited, and Chang Way Technologies Co. Limited, the last of which has been associated with extensive malware activity, hosting command-and-control (C2) servers of Amadey, StealC, and Cobalt Strike used by cybercriminals. Another entity of note is Next Limited, which shares the same Hong Kong address as Chang Way Technologies Co. Limited and has been attributed to malicious activity in connection with Proton66. U.S. Judge Bars NSO Group from Targeting WhatsApp — A U.S. judge barred NSO Group from targeting WhatsApp users and cut the punitive damages verdict awarded to Meta by a jury in May 2025 to $4 million, because the court did not have enough evidence to determine that NSO Group's behavior was "particularly egregious." The permanent injunction handed out by U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton means that the Israeli vendor cannot use WhatsApp as a way to infect targets' devices. As a refresher, Meta sued the NSO Group in 2019 over the use of Pegasus spyware by exploiting a then-zero-day flaw in the messaging app to spy on 1,400 people from 20 countries, including journalists and human rights activists. It was fined close to $168 million earlier this May. The proposed injunction requires NSO Group to delete and destroy computer code related to Meta's platforms, and she concluded that the provision is "necessary to prevent future violations, especially given the undetectable nature of defendants' technology." Google's Privacy Sandbox Initiative is Officially Dead — In 2019, Google launched an initiative called Privacy Sandbox to come up with privacy-enhancing alternatives to replace third-party cookies on the web. However, with the company abandoning its plans to deprecate third-party tracking cookies, the project appears to be winding down. To that end, the tech giant said it's retiring the following Privacy Sandbox technologies citing low levels of adoption: Attribution Reporting API (Chrome and Android), IP Protection, On-Device Personalization, Private Aggregation (including Shared Storage), Protected Audience (Chrome and Android), Protected App Signals, Related Website Sets (including requestStorageAccessFor and Related Website Partition), SelectURL, SDK Runtime and Topics (Chrome and Android). In a statement shared with Adweek, the company said it will continue to work to improve privacy across Chrome, Android, and the web, but not under the Privacy Sandbox branding. Russia Blocks Foreign SIM Cards — Russia said it's taking steps to temporarily block mobile internet for foreign SIM cards, citing national security reasons. The new rule imposes a mandatory 24-hour mobile internet blackout for anyone entering Russia with a foreign SIM card. Flaw in CORS headers in Web Browsers Disclosed — The CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC) disclosed details of a vulnerability in cross-origin resource sharing (CORS) headers in Chromium, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, and Firefox that enables the CORS policy to be manipulated. This can be combined with DNS rebinding techniques to issue arbitrary requests to services listening on arbitrary ports, regardless of the CORS policy in place by the target. "An attacker can use a malicious site to execute a JavaScript payload that periodically sends CORS headers in order to ask the server if the cross-origin request is safe and allowed," CERT/CC explained. "Naturally, the attacker-controlled hostname will respond with permissive CORS headers that will circumvent the CORS policy. The attacker then performs a DNS rebinding attack so that the hostname is assigned the IP address of the target service. After the DNS responds with the changed IP address, the new target inherits the relaxed CORS policy, allowing an attacker to potentially exfiltrate data from the target." Mozilla is tracking the vulnerability as CVE-2025-8036. Phishing Campaigns Use Microsoft's Logo for Tech Support Scams — Threat actors are exploiting Microsoft's Name and branding in phishing emails to lure users into fraudulent tech support scams. The messages contain links that, when clicked, take the victims to a fake CAPTCHA challenge, after which they are redirected to a phishing landing page to unleash the next stage of the attack. "After passing the captcha verification, the victim is suddenly visually overloaded with several pop-ups that appear to be Microsoft security alerts," Cofense said. "Their browser is manipulated to appear locked, and they lose the ability to locate or control their mouse, which adds to the feeling that the system is compromised. This involuntary loss of control creates a faux ransomware experience, leading the user to believe their computer is locked and to take immediate action to remedy the infection." From there, users are instructed to call a number to reach Windows Support, at which they are connected to a bogus technician to take the attack forward. "The threat actor could exploit further by asking the user to provide account credentials or persuade the user to install remote desktop tools, allowing full access to their system," the company said. Taxpayers, Drivers Targeted in Refund and Road Toll Smishing Scams — A smishing campaign has leveraged at least 850 newly-registered domain names in September and early October to target people living in the U.S., the U.K., and elsewhere with phishing links that use tax refunds, road toll charges, or failed package deliveries as a lure. The websites, designed to be loaded only when launched from a mobile device, claim to provide information about their tax refund status or obtain a subsidy of up to £300 to help offset winter fuel costs (note: this is a real U.K. government initiative), only to prompt them to provide personal details such as name, home address, telephone number and email address, as well as payment card information. The entered data is exfiltrated to the attackers over the WebSocket protocol. Some of the scam websites have also been found to target Canadian, German, and Spanish residents and visitors, per Netcraft. Meta's New Collage Feature May Use Photos in Phone's Camera Roll — Meta is officially rolling out a new opt-in feature to Facebook users in the U.S. and Canada to suggest the best photos and videos from users' camera roll and create collages and edits. "With your permission and the help of AI, our new feature enables Facebook to automatically surface hidden gems – those memorable moments that get lost among screenshots, receipts, and random snaps – and edit them to save or share," the company said. The feature was first tested back in late June 2025. The social media company emphasized that the suggestions are private and that it does not use media obtained from users' devices via the camera roll to train its models, unless users opt to edit the media with their AI tools or publish those suggestions to Facebook. Users who wish to opt out of the feature can do so by navigating Settings and Privacy > Settings > Preferences > Camera Roll Sharing Suggestions. Fake Homebrew, TradingView, LogMeIn Sites Serve Stealer Malware Targeting Macs — Threat actors are employing social engineering tactics to trick users into visiting fake websites impersonating trusted platforms like as Homebrew, TradingView, and LogMeIn, where they are instructed to copy and run a malicious command on the Terminal app as part of ClickFix-style attacks, resulting in the deployment of stealer malware such as Atomic Stealer and Odyssey Stealer. "More than 85 phishing domains were identified, connected through shared SSL certificates, payload servers, and reused infrastructure," Hunt.io said. "The findings suggest a coordinated and ongoing campaign in which operators continuously adapt their infrastructure and tactics to maintain persistence and evade detection within the macOS ecosystem." It's suspected that users are driven to these websites via sponsored ads on search engines like Bing and Google. Dutch Data Protection Watchdog Fines Experian $3.2 Million for Privacy Violations — The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) imposed a fine of €2.7 million ($3.2 million) on Experian Netherlands for collecting data in contravention of the E.U. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The DPA said the consumer credit reporting company gathered information on people from both public and non-public sources and failed to make it clear why the collection of certain data was necessary. In addition to the penalty, Experian is expected to delete the database of personal data by the end of the year. The company has also ceased its operations in the country. "Until January 1, 2025, Experian provided credit assessments about individuals to its clients," the DPA said. "To do this, the company collected data such as negative payment behavior, outstanding debts, or bankruptcies. The AP found that Experian violated the law by unlawfully using personal data." Threat Actors Send Fake Password Manager Breach Alerts — Bad actors are sending phishing alerts claiming that their password manager accounts for 1Password and Lastpass have been compromised in order to trick users into providing their passwords and hijack their accounts. In response to the attack, LastPass said it has not been hacked and that it's an attempt on the part of the attackers to generate a false sense of urgency. In some cases spotted by Bleeping Computer, the activity has also been found to urge recipients to install a more secure version of the password manager, resulting in the deployment of a legitimate remote access software called Syncro. The software vendor has since moved to shut down the malicious accounts to prevent further installs. SocGholish MaaS Detailed — LevelBlue has published an analysis of a threat activity cluster known as SocGholish (aka FakeUpdates), which is known to be active since 2017, leveraging fake web browser update prompts on compromised websites as a lure to distribute malware. Victims are typically routed through Traffic Distribution Systems (TDS) like Keitaro and Parrot TDS to filter users based on specific factors such as geography, browser type, or system configuration, ensuring that only the intended targets are exposed to the payload. It's offered under a malware-as-a-service (MaaS) by a financially motivated cybercrime group called TA569. SocGholish stands out for its ability to turn legitimate websites into large-scale distribution platforms for malware. Acting as an initial access broker (IAB), its operations profit from follow-on compromises by other actors. "Once executed, its payloads range from loaders and stealers to ransomware, allowing for extensive follow-up exploitation," LevelBlue said. "This combination of broad reach, simple delivery mechanisms, and flexible use by multiple groups makes SocGholish a persistent and dangerous threat across industries and regions." One of its primary users is Evil Corp, with the malware also used to deliver RansomHub in early 2025. 🎥 Cybersecurity Webinars The Practical Framework to Govern AI Agents Without Slowing Innovation → AI is changing everything fast — but for most security teams, it still feels like a fight just to keep up. Here’s How to Fix Them — Cloud storage buckets like AWS S3, Azure Blob, and Google Cloud Storage make data sharing easy — but one wrong setting can expose everything. Most data leaks happen not because of hacking, but because someone left a public bucket, skipped encryption, or used a test bucket that never got locked down. Cloud platforms give you flexibility, not guaranteed safety, so you need to check and control access yourself. Misconfigurations usually happen when permissions are too broad, encryption is disabled, or visibility is lost across multiple clouds. Doing manual checks doesn’t scale — especially if you manage data in AWS, Azure, and GCP. The fix is using tools that automatically find, report, and even fix unsafe settings before they cause damage. ScoutSuite is a strong starting point for cross-cloud visibility. It scans AWS, Azure, and GCP for open buckets, weak IAM roles, and missing encryption, then creates an easy-to-read HTML report. Prowler goes deeper into AWS, checking S3 settings against CIS and AWS benchmarks to catch bad ACLs or unencrypted buckets. For ongoing control, Cloud Custodian lets you write simple policies that automatically enforce rules — for example, forcing all new buckets to use encryption. And CloudQuery can turn your cloud setup into a searchable database, so you can monitor changes, track compliance, and visualize risks in one place. The best approach is to combine them: run ScoutSuite or Prowler weekly to find issues, and let Cloud Custodian handle automatic fixes. Even a few hours spent setting these up can stop the kind of data leaks that make headlines. Always assume every bucket is public until proven otherwise — and secure it like it is. Conclusion The truth is, no tool or patch will ever make us fully secure. What matters most is awareness — knowing what’s normal, what’s changing, and how attackers think. Every alert, log, or minor anomaly is a clue. Keep connecting those dots before someone else does.

Hackers used Cisco zero-day to plant rootkits on network switches (CVE-2025-20352)
Hackers used Cisco zero-day to plant rootkits on network switches (CVE-2025-20352) Threat actors have leveraged a recently patched IOS/IOS XE vulnerability (CVE-2025-20352) to deploy Linux rootkits on vulnerable Cisco network devices. “The operation targeted victims running older Linux systems that do not have endpoint detection response solutions,” Trend Micro researchers shared. Once a rootkit was implanted, it would set a universal password (containing the word “disco”) and install several hooks onto the IOSd (process) memory space, to make fileless components disappear after a reboot. About CVE-2025-20352 In late September 2025, Cisco fixed an IOS/IOS XE vulnerability (CVE-2025-20352) exploited by attackers in zero-day attacks, but did not share additional details about the attacks. CVE-2025-20352, a stack overflow vulnerability in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) subsystem of Cisco IOS and IOS XE software, could lead to either a DoS condition or remote code execution, and the latter only if the attacker already had high-privileges a vulnerable device. “An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted SNMP packet to an affected device over IPv4 or IPv6 networks,” Cisco noted, and shared that the attackers were able to get their hands on valid local administrator credentials and use them to achieve remote code execution. Researchers’ findings Trend Micro discovered that the attackers exploited the flaw in Cisco 9400, 9300, and legacy 3750G series devices. They wielded several exploits and targeted both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. They also attempted to exploit a modified version of an old Telnet vulnerability (CVE-2017-3881), to achieve memory read/write at arbitrary addresses. The researchers uncovered several exploits used by the attackers. One was used to install the Linux rootkit, and one to stop trace logging on the target device. “Trend investigation also found a UDP controller component used to control the rootkit, and an arp spoofing tool on a Cisco switch,” the researchers shared. “The UDP controller provides several powerful management functions: it can toggle log history on or off or delete log records entirely; bypass AAA authentication and bypass VTY access-control lists; enable or disable a universal password; conceal portions of the running configuration; and reset the timestamp of the last running-config write so the configuration appears never to have been changed.” The arp spoffing tool can be used to make the traffic meant for the network device be sent to the attacker first. What to do? Cisco has advised customers to use the Cisco Software Checker or a form in the CVE-2025-20352 security advisory to check whether their devices are running an affected version, and to update them if they are. Trend Micro has shared indicators of compromise related to these attacks, but also noted that there is no universal automated tool that can be used determine whether a Cisco switch has been successfully compromised by the ZeroDisco operation (as they call it). “If you suspect a switch is affected, we recommend contacting Cisco TAC immediately and asking the vendor to assist with a low-level investigation of firmware/ROM/boot regions,” the researchers advised. While the targeted devices may be older ones, the exploits can work on newer ones, as well. “Newer switch models provide some protection via Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), which reduces the success rate of intrusion attempts; however, it should be noted that repeated attempts can still succeed,” the researchers added. Hackers exploit Cisco SNMP flaw to deploy rootkit on switches
Threat actors exploited a recently patched remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2025-20352) in Cisco networking devices to deploy a rootkit and target unprotected Linux systems. The security issue leveraged in the attacks affects the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) in Cisco IOS and IOS XE and leads to RCE if the attacker has root privileges. According to cybersecurity company Trend Micro, the attacks exploited the flaw in Cisco 9400, 9300, and legacy 3750G series devices and deployed rootkits on "older Linux systems that do not have endpoint detection response solutions." In the original bulletin for CVE-2025-20352, updated on October 6, Cisco tagged the vulnerability as exploited as a zero day, with the company's Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) saying it was "aware of successful exploitation." Trend Micro researchers track the attacks under the name 'Operation Zero Disco' because the malware sets a universal access password that contains the word "disco." The report from Trend Micro notes that the threat actor also attempted to exploit CVE-2017-3881, a seven-year-old vulnerability in the Cluster Management Protocol code in IOS and IOS XE. The rootkit planted on vulnerable Cisco devices features a UDP controller that can listen on any port, toggle or delete logs, bypass AAA and VTY ACLs, enable/disable the universal password, hide running configuration items, and reset the last write timestamp for them. In a simulated attack, the researchers showed that it is possible to disable logging, impersonate a waystation IP via ARP spoofing, bypass internal firewall rules, and move laterally between VLANs. Although newer switches are more resistant to these attacks due to Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) protection, Trend Micro says that they are not immune and persistent targeting could compromise them. After deploying the rootkit, the malware "installs several hooks onto the IOSd, which results in fileless components disappearing after a reboot," the researchers say. The researchers were able to recover both 32-bit and 64-bit variants of the SNMP exploit. Trend Micro notes that there currently exists no tool that can reliably flag a compromised Cisco switch from these attacks. If there is suspicion of a hack, the recommendation is to perform a low-level firmware and ROM region investigation. A list of the indicators of compromise (IoCs) associated with 'Operation Zero Disco' can be found here. Update [Oct 17, 06:16 EST]: Article edited to clarify that the lack of endpoint detection and response protection referred to older Linux systems. Overall prevention scores can hide what happens after initial access. Once attackers are using valid credentials, prevention drops sharply. New Rootkit Campaign Exploits Cisco SNMP Flaw to Gain Persistence
A campaign that exploited a Cisco Simple Network Management Protocol vulnerability to install Linux rootkits on exposed network devices has been observed. The exploit, tracked as CVE-2025-20352 and detailed in a new analysis by Trend Micro, allowed remote code execution and persistent, unauthorized access by embedding hooks into IOSd memory and creating a universal password based around the word “disco.” Exploit Mechanics and Control Attackers combined the SNMP exploit with a modified Telnet flaw based on CVE-2017-3881 to read and write memory, and then used a UDP controller on infected switches to toggle logs bypass authentication and conceal configuration changes. Trend Micro said the operation targeted older Linux hosts lacking endpoint detection response, where fileless components could disappear after reboot, yet still enable lateral movement. Trend Research recovered multiple exploit variants for 32-bit and 64-bit platforms and found the operation impacted Cisco 9400 series, 9300 series and legacy 3750G devices. Cisco provided forensic support that helped confirm affected models and assisted the investigation. Attacks against 32-bit builds included an SNMP exploit that split command payloads across packets and a Telnet variant used to permit arbitrary memory access. For 64-bit targets attackers needed guest shell access at level 15 to install a fileless backdoor and to use a UDP controller to perform management functions remotely. Rootkit Capabilities and Detection The rootkit granted several covert capabilities, including: Acting as a UDP listener on any port for remote commands Creating a universal password by modifying IOSd memory Hiding running-config items such as account names EEM scripts and ACLs Bypassing VTY ACLs and resetting the last running-config write timestamp Toggling or deleting device logs Currently, there is no universal automated test to confirm compromise by this operation. If compromise is suspected, device owners are advised to contact Cisco TAC for a low-level firmware and ROM investigation, and to apply vendor guidance and detection rules supplied by Trend Micro. To prevent compromise, device owners should promptly install Cisco patches and firmware updates, remove or harden default SNMP community strings or disable SNMP when not required, and restrict management access to bastion hosts and dedicated admin networks. They should also disable Telnet and guest shell or tightly control level 15 access, deploy endpoint detection on Linux hosts, implement strong ACLs and network segmentation, enable ASLR-capable hardware where available, and adopt the detection rules and hunting queries provided by Trend Micro. CISA Sounds Alarm on Critical Sudo Flaw Actively Exploited in Linux and Unix Systems
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on Monday added a critical security flaw impacting the Sudo command-line utility for Linux and Unix-like operating systems to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, citing evidence of active exploitation in the wild. The vulnerability in question is CVE-2025-32463 (CVSS score: 9.3), which affects Sudo versions prior to 1.9.17p1. It was disclosed by Stratascale researcher Rich Mirch back in July 2025. "Sudo contains an inclusion of functionality from an untrusted control sphere vulnerability," CISA said. "This vulnerability could allow a local attacker to leverage sudo's -R (--chroot) option to run arbitrary commands as root, even if they are not listed in the sudoers file." It's currently not known how the shortcoming is being exploited in real-world attacks, and who may be behind such efforts. Also added to the KEV catalog are four other flaws - CVE-2021-21311 - Adminer contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability that, when exploited, allows a remote attacker to obtain potentially sensitive information. (Disclosed as exploited by Google Mandiant in May 2022 by a threat actor called UNC2903 to target AWS IMDS setups) CVE-2025-20352 - Cisco IOS and IOS XE contain a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) subsystem that could allow for denial of service or remote code execution. (Disclosed as exploited by Cisco last week) CVE-2025-10035 - Fortra GoAnywhere MFT contains a deserialization of untrusted data vulnerability that allows an actor with a validly forged license response signature to deserialize an arbitrary actor-controlled object, possibly leading to command injection. (Disclosed as exploited by watchTowr Labs last week) CVE-2025-59689 - Libraesva Email Security Gateway (ESG) contains a command injection vulnerability that allows command injection via a compressed email attachment. (Disclosed as exploited by Libraesva last week) In light of active exploitation, Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies relying on the affected products are advised to apply the necessary mitigations by October 20, 2025, to secure their networks.

Cisco Warns of Actively Exploited SNMP Vulnerability Allowing RCE or DoS in IOS Software
Cisco has warned of a high-severity security flaw in IOS Software and IOS XE Software that could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or trigger a denial-of-service (DoS) condition under specific circumstances. The company said the vulnerability, CVE-2025-20352 (CVSS score: 7.7), has been exploited in the wild, adding it became aware of it "after local Administrator credentials were compromised." The issue, per the networking equipment major, is rooted in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) subsystem, arising as a result of a stack overflow condition. An authenticated, remote attacker could exploit the flaw by sending a crafted SNMP packet to an affected device over IPv4 or IPv6 networks, resulting in DoS if they have low privileges or arbitrary code execution as root if they have high privileges and ultimately take control of the susceptible system. However, Cisco noted that for this to happen, the following conditions need to be met - To cause the DoS, the attacker must have the SNMPv2c or earlier read-only community string or valid SNMPv3 user credentials To execute code as the root user, the attacker must have the SNMPv1 or v2c read-only community string or valid SNMPv3 user credentials and administrative or privilege 15 credentials on the affected device The company said the issue affects all versions of SNMP, as well as Meraki MS390 and Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series Switches that are running Meraki CS 17 and earlier. It has been fixed in Cisco IOS XE Software Release 17.15.4a. Cisco IOS XR Software and NX-OS Software are not impacted. "This vulnerability affects all versions of SNMP. All devices that have SNMP enabled and have not explicitly excluded the affected object ID (OID) should be considered vulnerable," Cisco said. While there are no workarounds that resolve CVE-2025-20352, one mitigation proposed by Cisco involves allowing only trusted users to have SNMP access on an affected system, and monitoring the systems by running the "show snmp host" command. "Administrators can disable the affected OIDs on a device," it added. "Not all software will support the OID that is listed in the mitigation. If the OID is not valid for specific software, then it is not affected by this vulnerability. Excluding these OIDs may affect device management through SNMP, such as discovery and hardware inventory."

Cisco warns of IOS zero-day vulnerability exploited in attacks
Cisco has released security updates to address a high-severity zero-day vulnerability in Cisco IOS and IOS XE Software that is currently being exploited in attacks. Tracked as CVE-2025-20352, the flaw is due to a stack-based buffer overflow weakness found in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) subsystem of vulnerable IOS and IOS XE software, impacting all devices with SNMP enabled. Authenticated, remote attackers with low privileges can exploit this vulnerability to trigger denial-of-service (DoS) conditions on unpatched devices. High-privileged attackers, on the other hand, can gain complete control of systems running vulnerable Cisco IOS XE software by executing code as the root user. "An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted SNMP packet to an affected device over IPv4 or IPv6 networks," Cisco said in a Wednesday advisory. "The Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) became aware of successful exploitation of this vulnerability in the wild after local Administrator credentials were compromised. Cisco strongly recommends that customers upgrade to a fixed software release to remediate this vulnerability." While there are no workarounds to address this vulnerability besides applying the patches released today, Cisco said that administrators who can't immediately upgrade the vulnerable software can temporarily mitigate the issue by limiting SNMP access on an affected system to trusted users. "To fully remediate this vulnerability and avoid future exposure as described in this advisory, Cisco strongly recommends that customers upgrade to the fixed software indicated in this advisory," the company warned. Today, Cisco patched 13 other security vulnerabilities, including two for which proof-of-concept exploit code is available. The first one, a Cisco IOS XE reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw tracked as CVE-2025-20240, can be used by an unauthenticated, remote attacker to steal cookies from vulnerable devices. The second, tracked as CVE-2025-20149, is a denial-of-service vulnerability that allows authenticated, local attackers to force affected devices to reload. In May, the company also fixed a maximum severity IOS XE flaw impacting Wireless LAN Controllers, which enabled unauthenticated attackers to remotely take over devices using a hard-coded JSON Web Token (JWT). Overall prevention scores can hide what happens after initial access. Once attackers are using valid credentials, prevention drops sharply. Open-source flow monitoring with SENSOR: Benefits and trade-offs
Open-source flow monitoring with SENSOR: Benefits and trade-offs Flow monitoring tools are useful for tracking traffic patterns, planning capacity, and spotting threats. But many off-the-shelf solutions come with steep licensing costs and hardware demands, especially if you want to process every packet. A research team at the University of Tübingen has built an alternative: an open-source, cost-effective, and distributed platform for collecting unsampled IPFIX data. Their system, called SENSOR, uses open-source software and vendor-agnostic components to monitor traffic at multiple points in the university’s network. This setup captures internal flows that would otherwise go unnoticed if monitoring were only done at the perimeter. The approach avoids the need for expensive routers with built-in flow exporters and instead uses mirror ports and general-purpose servers running software-based flow meters. Flow monitoring platform at the University of Tübingen How it works At the core of the platform are two types of flow meters: high-performance servers running the open-source tool yaf, and MikroTik routers using a custom configuration to generate IPFIX from mirrored traffic. For backbone and datacenter traffic, the team uses servers with 100 Gbit/s NICs and yaf configured to use the PF RING library for packet processing. yaf supports plugins for deep packet inspection, application labeling, and even DHCP-based OS identification. For access-level monitoring, the team turned to MikroTik routers. These devices don’t normally support passive flow monitoring from mirror ports. But the researchers found a workaround. By creating a bridge and forcing traffic through RouterOS’s firewall stack, they were able to get MikroTik’s “traffic flow” feature to generate usable IPFIX data, even though the packets weren’t originally forwarded by the device. This lets them use a relatively low-cost router with a powerful CPU to collect flow data without modifying the rest of the network. Collecting and processing flows On the collection side, the platform uses several tools in parallel: nfacctd to replicate flows, nfdump and SiLK for analysis and storage, and GoFlow2 for format conversion. GoFlow2 standardizes flows into JSON or Protobuf and sends them to Apache Kafka, which lets downstream components process them as events. The team also uses flowpipeline to build analysis workflows, including anonymization and metrics extraction. By mixing and matching collectors, the system can support different use cases and allow for custom pipelines. Each component is replaceable and modular, which helps tailor the platform to performance needs or analysis goals. Why it matters Most flow monitoring setups rely on embedded flow meters that are locked to a vendor and require powerful, expensive devices. SENSOR shows it’s possible to build a flexible and scalable alternative using only open tools and commodity hardware. It also allows operators to monitor internal traffic more comprehensively, not just what crosses the network border. Boris Lukashev, CTO at Semper Victus & InferSight, told Help Net Security that the ability to collect unsampled flows with open tools is valuable, but context matters. “Sampling works well for network engineering but is less effective for security operations. Vendor approaches vary, and if someone exfiltrates a few bytes over a segment sampled at 100:1, you might miss it entirely. Some vendors still capture it even when ‘off-sample’ because it’s stored in the device’s internal flow tables.” Lukashev says the paper makes a fair point, but the pipeline the researchers built feels heavier than necessary unless you need advanced enrichment with deterministic latency. “Full line-rate NIDS taps are typically beyond the scope of most network engineering teams that support security, and they require architectural planning before purchase to be effective. Flow collection is much simpler as long as it starts at the actual packet processing point, whether that’s the dataplane, ring 0, or wherever the work happens,” Lukashev explained. The system is already deployed at the University of Tübingen, and the team plans to expand their work by benchmarking the performance limits of the flow meters and packet processing libraries involved. Understanding where those limits lie will help ensure that monitoring stays unsampled even at higher traffic volumes. Scaling beyond small networks David Montoya, Global Business Development Manager OT/IoT at Paessler, calls SENSOR “a great example of how to use open-source technologies to overcome a lack of enterprise-grade equipment while still granting access to in-depth traffic analysis.” But he also cautions that it is “based on technologies that are not the first choice for a large network or an ISP.” While MikroTik routers play a key role in SENSOR, David points out that these devices are aimed at small and medium-sized businesses rather than large enterprises. They fill routing gaps effectively and affordably, but he sees limited use for them at scale compared to equipment from Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, or Nokia. He notes that enterprise-class routers from the major vendors already ship with embedded IPFIX, NetFlow v9, or jFlow, along with the processing power to handle traffic sampling. These can connect directly to collectors and integrate with other monitoring protocols such as SNMP for volume tracking, RMON for data corruption detection, and QoS tools for measuring jitter and packet loss. Together, these provide a broader operational view. The limitation with SENSOR, he says, is that while it offers detailed flow visibility, it doesn’t unify these other protocols in one interface. For a large network, that can make troubleshooting and oversight more complex. “Something like this is fine for small networks,” David explains, “but it certainly complicates troubleshooting and oversight on larger networks.” David also sees potential for SENSOR to expand beyond historical analysis by adding real-time alerting. “The paper doesn’t describe whether the flow collectors can trigger alarms for anomalies like rapidly spiking UDP traffic, which could indicate a DDoS attack in progress. Adding real-time triggers like this would be a valuable enhancement that makes SENSOR more operationally useful for network teams.” Hardware and performance caveats Leo Valentić, CEO at RESILIX, highlights hardware-related constraints in SENSOR’s design. “The main limitation is that the MikroTik bridge workaround sends mirrored traffic through the CPU instead of dedicated switching hardware. This limits performance, makes the setup less robust, and creates a bottleneck in high-throughput environments that can lead to dropped packets or incomplete flow data, which undermines the goal of unsampled monitoring.” Valentić notes there is also a risk of drops or inconsistencies in flow exports, since the device is not designed to handle passive mirrored traffic this way and can behave unpredictably under load. “Finally, the approach is fragile. It relies on precise bridge and firewall configurations to push traffic through the RouterOS stack, which makes it sensitive to updates, misconfigurations, or hardware changes. In production environments where reliability is critical, this would be hard to justify,” he concluded. For now, SENSOR is best seen as a capable, budget-friendly option for historical analysis and targeted monitoring, with room to grow if real-time alerting and greater scalability are added.
