RingCentral data breach exposed info of 1.6 million accounts
The ShinyHunters extortion group stole personal information from 1.6 million RingCentral accounts after hacking the company in July, according to the data breach notification service Have I Been Pwned. RingCentral is a cloud-based collaboration and communication platform used by over 600,000 businesses for services such as calling, messaging, and voicemail. The company disclosed the incident on July 28, revealing that its systems were compromised following what it described as a "sophisticated social engineering campaign." "We have not seen any new unauthorized activity since taking these remediation efforts. To date, this incident has affected data for a limited portion of RingCentral customers, and we are communicating with affected customers directly," it noted. "If you are not contacted by RingCentral, you are not affected. This incident did not impact the core RingCentral platform, and our services continue to operate without disruption." Although RingCentral has not attributed the breach to a specific threat actor or hacking group and has yet to share further details on the incident, the ShinyHunters extortion gang claimed responsibility on July 27, claiming they had stolen 623GB of data. After the company refused to pay a ransom to have the stolen data destroyed, the cybercrime group leaked a compressed archive containing 280GB worth of files on their dark web leak site. While a RingCentral spokesperson didn't immediately reply when contacted by BleepingComputer to confirm ShinyHunters' claims, Have I Been Pwned confirmed the link after analyzing the leaked data and said on Thursday that it contained records for 1.6 million accounts, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, and physical addresses. "In July 2026, the cloud-based business communications platform RingCentral was the target of a ShinyHunters 'pay or leak' extortion campaign," it said. Although RingCentral has yet to share exactly how the threat actors gained access to its systems, ShinyHunters has claimed breaches at hundreds of Salesforce customers over the past year, saying they've stolen over 1.5 billion records in Salesloft Drift and Salesforce Aura campaigns. The extortion group was also linked to security breaches at more than a dozen Snowflake customers, as well as various other third-party integration providers. Most recently, ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for a new series of breaches at over 100 organizations following data-theft attacks that exploited an Oracle PeopleSoft zero-day flaw. 1.6 Million Likely Impacted by RingCentral Data Breach
The personal information of 1.6 million individuals appears to have been stolen from the widely used business communications platform RingCentral by a notorious extortion group. The incident occurred in July and was the result of a “sophisticated social engineering campaign”, RingCentral said in a notice on its website. “Upon detection, we promptly took steps to stop the unauthorized activity and immediately began an investigation with assistance from a leading third-party forensic firm. We have not seen any new unauthorized activity since taking these remediation efforts,” the company said. According to RingCentral, only a limited portion of its customers was affected by the attack, and those individuals were notified directly. “If you are not contacted by RingCentral, you are not affected. This incident did not impact the core RingCentral platform, and our services continue to operate without disruption,” it said. While RingCentral did not name the attackers, the ShinyHunters extortion group added the company to its Tor-based leak site in late July, claiming it stole over 623 gigabytes of data. Roughly a week later, as RingCentral did not succumb to the extortionists’ demands, ShinyHunters published a 280GB archive containing the data allegedly stolen from the company. On Thursday, data breach reporting site HaveIBeenPwned added the leaked information to its database, saying that it includes approximately 1.6 million unique email addresses, accompanied by names, addresses, and phone numbers. RingCentral has yet to confirm the attackers’ claims and the number of potentially impacted individuals. RingCentral is a cloud-based provider of unified communications and contact center solutions. Its platform delivers business phone, team messaging, video meetings, and AI-assisted tools for employee collaboration and customer interactions. Responding to a SecurityWeek inquiry, a RingCentral spokesperson provided the following statement: “RingCentral recently addressed a social engineering incident that affected a limited number of customers. Upon detection, we promptly took steps to stop the unauthorized activity and have not seen any new unauthorized activity since taking these efforts. We also began an investigation with assistance from a third-party forensic firm to investigate what happened and what data may have been impacted. This incident did not impact the RingCentral core platform and our services continue to operate without disruption. Phishing service spoofs RingCentral to steal Microsoft 365 accounts
The Greatness phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) platform has expanded from credential phishing to adversary-in-the-middle attacks and device-code phishing targeting Microsoft 365 accounts. The platform has been active since at least mid-2022, targeting Microsoft 365 users in the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and South Africa. It evolved over the years and now targets multiple platforms, including Microsoft 365, iCloud, Yahoo, and Google Workspace. Currently, it is sold for $289 per month to cybercriminals over a Telegram channel with thousands of subscribers. In a recent campaign observed by researchers at email security company ZeroBEC, Greatness operators abused the RingCentral communications platform to bypass email security filters on the recipient side. RingCentral is a communications platform used by businesses for services such as cloud calling, messaging, and voicemail. In the Greatness phishing activity, the attacker impersonated the platform by claiming their emails came from service@ringcentral[.]com, targeting actual users of the service. These emails used fake voicemail and performance-review notifications as lures to entice recipients to open them. Although the messages originated from an unknown IONOS mail server, failed SPF and DMARC checks, and had no DKIM signature, they were still accepted by the receiving systems because RingCentral was whitelisted. Moreover, the emails included a fraudulent banner claiming that the sender had been verified by the organization’s safe-sender list, which helped reduce suspicion at the human level. ZeroBEC explains that the tactic achieved a Spam Confidence Level (SCL) of -1 on Microsoft Exchange, allowing them to bypass the normal email filtering stages. Clicking the button embedded in those emails took victims to the Greatness infrastructure, where they were routed either through a Microsoft adversary-in-the-middle (AiTM) phishing flow that captured an MFA-approved authentication token or through a device-code phishing flow. Post-compromise, the attacker replayed Microsoft 365 authentication tokens from VPS and commercial VPN infrastructure to access the compromised accounts. They then enumerated Outlook mailboxes, Teams conversations, SharePoint sites, OneDrive files, contacts, calendars, and registered applications through Microsoft Graph, with access persisting for more than two weeks in some cases. It should be noted that RingCentral recently disclosed a data breach incident which was claimed by threat actor ShinyHunters. “This incident has affected data for a limited portion of RingCentral customers, and we are communicating with affected customers directly,” explained the company in a security bulletin published July 28. ZeroBEC comments that it’s likely that cybercriminals using Greatness got a list of valid targets, users of the RingCentral platform, from that incident, though a connection cannot be confidently made. The researchers recommend auditing safe-sender lists and replacing blanket domain exclusions with rules requiring valid email authentication. Also, hunt for Greatness infrastructure and suspicious MFA-approved Microsoft 365 sign-ins from hosting or VPN addresses. If compromise is suspected, administrators should revoke all access and refresh tokens, review OAuth consent, Microsoft Graph activity, and access to Microsoft 365 services. Attackers Use Fake OAuth Apps with Tycoon Kit to Breach Microsoft 365 Accounts
Cybersecurity researchers have detailed a new cluster of activity where threat actors are impersonating enterprises with fake Microsoft OAuth applications to facilitate credential harvesting as part of account takeover attacks. "The fake Microsoft 365 applications impersonate various companies, including RingCentral, SharePoint, Adobe, and Docusign," Proofpoint said in a Thursday report. The ongoing campaign, first detected in early 2025, is designed to use the OAuth applications as a gateway to obtain unauthorized access to users' Microsoft 365 accounts by means of phishing kits like Tycoon and ODx that are capable of conducting multi-factor authentication (MFA) phishing. The enterprise security company said it observed the approach being used in email campaigns with more than 50 impersonated applications. The attacks begin with phishing emails sent from compromised accounts and aim to trick recipients into clicking on URLs under the pretext of sharing requests for quotes (RFQ) or business contract agreements. Clicking on these links directs the victim to a Microsoft OAuth page for an application named "iLSMART" that asks them to grant it permissions to view their basic profile and maintain continued access to the data that they have been granted access to. What makes this attack notable is the impersonation of ILSMart, a legitimate online marketplace for aviation, marine, and defense industries to buy and sell parts and repair services. "The applications' permissions would provide limited use to an attacker, but it is used for setting up the next stage of the attack," Proofpoint said. Regardless of whether the target accepted or denied the permissions requested, they are first redirected to a CAPTCHA page and then to a phony Microsoft account authentication page once the verification is complete. This fake Microsoft page makes use of adversary-in-the-middle (AitM) phishing techniques powered by the Tycoon Phishing-as-a-Service (PhaaS) platform to harvest the victim's credentials and MFA codes. As recently as last month, Proofpoint said it detected another campaign impersonating Adobe in which the emails are sent via Twilio SendGrid, an email marketing platform, and are engineered with the same goal in mind: To gain user authorization or trigger a cancellation flow that redirects the victim to a phishing page. The campaign represents just a drop in the bucket when compared to overall Tycoon-related activity, with the multiple clusters leveraging the toolkit to perform account takeover attacks. In 2025 alone, attempted account compromises affecting nearly 3,000 user accounts spanning more than 900 Microsoft 365 environments have been observed. "Threat actors are creating increasingly innovative attack chains in an attempt to bypass detections and obtain access to organizations globally," the company said, adding it "anticipates threat actors will increasingly target users’ identity, with AiTM credential phishing becoming the criminal industry standard." As of last month, Microsoft has announced plans to update default settings to improve security by blocking legacy authentication protocols and requiring admin consent for third-party app access. The updates are expected to be completed by August 2025. "This update will have a positive impact on the landscape overall and will hamstring threat actors that use this technique," Proofpoint pointed out. The disclosure follows Microsoft's decision to disable external workbook links to blocked file types by default between October 2025 and July 2026 in an attempt to enhance workbook security. The findings also come as spear-phishing emails bearing purported payment receipts are used to deploy by means of an AutoIt-based injector a piece of .NET malware called VIP Keylogger that can steal sensitive data from compromised hosts, Seqrite said. Over the course of several months, spam campaigns have been spotted concealing installation links to remote desktop software inside PDF files so as to bypass email and malware defenses. The campaign is believed to have been ongoing since November 2024, primarily targeting entities in France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany. "These PDFs are often disguised to look like invoices, contracts, or property listings to enhance credibility and lure victims into clicking the embedded link," WithSecure said. "This design was intended to create the illusion of legitimate content that has been obscured, prompting the victim to install a program. In this case, the program was FleetDeck RMM." Other Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) tools deployed as part of the activity cluster include Action1, OptiTune, Bluetrait, Syncro, SuperOps, Atera, and ScreenConnect. "Although no post-infection payloads have been observed, the use of RMM tools strongly suggests their role as an initial access vector, potentially enabling further malicious activity," the Finnish company added. "Ransomware operators in particular have favoured this approach."
