Cisco email security boxes can be rooted by... an email
Criminals are exploiting a critical Cisco Secure Email Gateway flaw that can turn a malicious email into root access. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-76461, carries a 9.8 CVSS score and affects physical and virtual Secure Email Gateway appliances regardless of their configuration. Cisco says there are no workarounds, so patching is the only fix. The bug lies in how Cisco's AsyncOS software handles incoming email. An attacker doesn't need to log in: they can send a booby-trapped message through a vulnerable gateway and, if the exploit works, run commands as root. Which is not exactly what you want from the box tasked with keeping nasty emails out. Cisco's Product Security Incident Response Team said it became aware of active exploitation in September, although the networking giant hasn't said who is behind the attacks, how long they have been going on, or how many organizations have been compromised. Cisco uncovered the bug while resolving a Technical Assistance Center support case. Signs suggest at least some Cisco cloud customers were caught up in the attacks. Cisco said it investigated devices belonging to its Secure Email Cloud service and directly contacted customers whose appliances showed indicators of possible compromise. It is now carrying out remediation and recovery work and says all of its Secure Email Cloud devices have been upgraded to AsyncOS 16.5.0-780. Admins running their own appliances have a little more work to do. Cisco recommends checking logs for signs of suspicious activity, but warns that finding nothing doesn't necessarily mean the system is clean. Once attackers have root access, Cisco says they could tamper with the logs and cover their tracks. Admins are also being told to check network and firewall logs for anything unusual, rather than relying on the gateway itself for answers. For virtual appliances suspected of being compromised, Cisco's recovery advice is fairly drastic: preserve the forensic evidence, deploy a fresh VM running fixed software, rebuild the configuration, and rotate credentials and cryptographic material. Cisco has fixed the bug in AsyncOS releases 15.5.5-014, 16.0.4-302 and 16.5.0-780, with customers strongly encouraged to move to the latter. There's still a decent-sized target pool out there. The Shadowserver Foundation was tracking more than 400 Cisco Secure Email Gateway appliances exposed to the internet as of Monday The flaw has also landed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, with US federal civilian agencies ordered to remediate it by September 17. CVE-2026-76461 comes less than a year after attackers exploited another critical AsyncOS flaw, CVE-2025-20393, to break into Cisco Secure Email Gateway appliances and install persistence mechanisms. That bug eventually scored a perfect 10. For anyone still running an affected gateway, the message is fairly simple: the box designed to inspect hostile email can itself be pwned by one; attackers are already doing it, and there is no workaround to hide behind. ®

Swiss court sentences 52-year-old Ukrainian ransomware dev to nearly 13 years in the cooler
A Swiss court has sentenced a 52-year-old Ukrainian ransomware developer to 12 years and nine months in prison for his role in attacks on companies including Stadler Rail. Zurich District Court found that the man developed LockerGoga, MegaCortex, and Nefilim, but was not the mastermind behind the operations. He also received a ten-year ban from Switzerland. The judgment is not final and can be appealed. He had been held in pretrial detention since October 2021 and consistently denied knowing that his software was being used for criminal purposes. He said the source code found at his home in Basel-Landschaft came from his consulting work for an unidentified IT security client. The court rejected that explanation because extortion messages were also found among his data, SWI reported. The ransomware developer was also found guilty of playing a key role in high-profile ransomware attacks, including the one that hit Stadler Rail in 2020 [PDF]. Not to be confused with the more recent attack on the rolling stock manufacturer – that one was claimed by Everest – the earlier breach occurred in May 2020. At the time, Stadler Rail did not use the word "ransomware," but said the attack involved malware, that it "most likely led to a data leak," and that "the offenders tried to extort a large amount of money," threatening to leak the files if the ransom was not paid. As it did following this year's incident, Stadler refused to pay. The 2020 Nefilim ransom demand was reportedly $6 million. The court also found that he played a key role in attacks on HVAC company Meier Tobler and software company Crealogix. In September 2022, Zurich prosecutors reported that a suspect had been arrested in Basel-Landschaft in October 2021 on suspicion of money laundering and data corruption. The statement accused the perpetrators of involvement in attacks on more than 1,800 individuals and institutions across 71 countries, causing estimated losses of several hundred million Swiss francs. The same law enforcement action in 2021 led to the identification of other alleged members of the three ransomware operations, none of whom were named. Volodymyr Tymoshchuk was formally indicted in the US last year and was described by prosecutors as the mastermind of all three ransomware crews. Unlike many others, Tymoshchuk has not yet been arrested, but is on the FBI's most wanted list, with an $11 million bounty placed on the information that could lead to his arrest or conviction, or that of other key leaders. He was allegedly responsible for attacks on at least 250 companies, including the infamous Norsk Hydro attack in 2019. ®

PostgreSQL Fixes 12-Year-Old Logical Decoding Flaw Enabling Replication-Role Code Execution
PostgreSQL has released updates to address a security flaw that allows an account with the REPLICATION attribute to run arbitrary code as the operating-system user running the database server. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-6471 (CVSS score: 7.2), has been present since logical decoding was introduced in PostgreSQL 9.4 in 2014. Versions before PostgreSQL 18.6, 17.11, 16.15, 15.19, and 14.24 are affected. Exploitation requires an account carrying the REPLICATION attribute and a server running with wal_level = logical. Backup tools, standby servers, change data capture (CDC) pipelines, and monitoring systems routinely hold that attribute. The fix, shipped on August 13, adds a server parameter called output_plugin_libraries that lists which libraries may be loaded as logical decoding output plugins, defaulting to 'pgoutput, test_decoding'. Installations using any other output plugin, wal2json, and decoderbufs among them, will have logical decoding refused after updating until an administrator adds the library to that list and reloads the server configuration. "Previously, a replication user could select any loadable library for logical decoding, allowing exploits of various sorts. To allow locking this down without breaking setups that worked before, introduce a whitelist of allowed output plugins," the PostgreSQL Global Development Group said in the 18.6 release notes. The PostgreSQL Project credited Vladimir Tokarev and Yu Kunpeng with reporting the problem. Tokarev detailed it in a September 1 write-up for data security firm Cyera Research, which names the flaw PostGREShell. The plugin name supplied in a CREATE_REPLICATION_SLOT command is passed directly to the function that loads the library, Cyera said. PostgreSQL's existing restriction on plugin paths, which confines non-superusers to a single administrator-controlled directory, is never called on the replication path. The replication protocol's parser accepts almost any character inside a double-quoted plugin name, including path separators and ../ traversal, so a full filesystem path reaches the loader as typed. On Windows, the server resolves a network path over Server Message Block (SMB) and fetches the library from a machine the attacker controls, writing nothing to the target, Cyera said. On Linux and macOS, the same result requires enabling Network File System (NFS) automounting. Everywhere else the attacker needs an existing way to write a file to the server's disk. Code loaded this way runs inside the database backend process as the postgres operating-system user. Cyera's test plugin then wrote the role catalog directly to make the replication account a PostgreSQL superuser. It also set up three persistence mechanisms that survive a server restart. Cyera describes the REPLICATION attribute as a low-privilege backup credential, but PostgreSQL scored the flaw with Privileges Required set to High, a rating reproduced in SUSE's own assessment. PostgreSQL rejected applying its existing LOAD restriction to the replication path. "REPLICATION users were not previously subject to restrictions on output plugin paths, so they were able to bypass LOAD-time protections during logical decoding. Unfortunately, adding the standard LOAD restrictions now would retroactively require all third-party output plugins to be installed under the $libdir/plugins directory," Jacob Champion, who wrote the fix, said in the commit message. Failed loads appear in the server log as ERROR: library "..." may not be used as an output plugin, with a hint naming the setting, according to the parameter's documentation. Administrators are advised to take the following steps - Run SELECT DISTINCT plugin FROM pg_replication_slots WHERE plugin IS NOT NULL; before updating to identify the output plugins in use, which will only show plugins successfully used at some point. Update to 18.6, 17.11, 16.15, 15.19, or 14.24, or to the equivalent distribution package. Add any non-default plugin to output_plugin_libraries and reload the configuration with pg_ctl reload or SELECT pg_reload_conf(). A restart is not required. Set the new cluster's output_plugin_libraries before running pg_upgrade --check when migrating from version 17 or later, as the check fails if the list does not permit the old cluster's slot plugins. Fixed packages are available on Amazon RDS for all five branches, as well as from Debian, SUSE, and Ubuntu. PostgreSQL's advisory covers supported branches 14 through 18 and does not address earlier ones. PostgreSQL 14 stops receiving fixes on November 12, 2026, the project said in its release announcement. The upstream fix "requires additional changes to the configuration if some extensions are used," Debian's advisory warns, naming its wal2json and decoderbufs packages. Ubuntu's USN-8653-1, which shipped the fix for 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 LTS on August 20, makes no mention of the parameter and tells administrators only to restart PostgreSQL after the update. As of September 4, the wal2json project had updated its documentation to tell users to add the plugin to output_plugin_libraries, citing the CVE. A gap in the fix is still open. pg_createsubscriber creates replication slots using pgoutput without checking the new parameter, so a --dry-run succeeds and the conversion then fails. "pg_createsubscriber command creates replication slots with plugin 'pgoutput', without checking the GUC. This meant if the plugin name is not specified in the parameter, --dry-run mode passes but actual convertion fails. It's very surprising for users and should be avoided," Hayato Kuroda of Fujitsu said in a message to the pgsql-hackers mailing list. A patch was under review and had not been committed as of September 4. CVE-2026-6471 remained absent from CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog as of September 4. The Hacker News found no proof-of-concept code for it in public repositories on the same date. Until the update can be applied, Cyera said exposure can be reduced by stripping the REPLICATION attribute from accounts that do not need it, restricting replication entries in pg_hba.conf to known addresses, blocking outbound SMB (port 445) and NFS (port 2049) traffic from database servers, and disabling autofs where it is not needed.

Ivanti, Fortinet, n8n, SAP, and VMware have released security fixes for various vulnerabilities that could be exploited by bad actors to bypass authentication and execute arbitrary code. Topping the list is a critical flaw impacting Ivanti Xtraction (CVE-2026-8043, CVSS score: 9.6) that could be exploited to achieve information disclosure or client-side attacks. "External control of a file name in Ivanti Xtraction before version 2026.2 allows a remote authenticated attacker to read sensitive files and write arbitrary HTML files to a web directory, leading to information disclosure and possible client-side attacks," Ivanti said in an advisory. Fortinet published advisories for two critical shortcomings affecting FortiAuthenticator and FortiSandbox, FortiSandbox Cloud, and FortiSandbox PaaS that could result in code execution - CVE-2026-44277 (CVSS score: 9.1) - An improper access control vulnerability in FortiAuthenticator that may allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute unauthorized code or commands via crafted requests. (Fixed in FortiAuthenticator versions 6.5.7, 6.6.9, and 8.0.3) CVE-2026-26083 (CVSS score: 9.1) - A missing authorization vulnerability in FortiSandbox, FortiSandbox Cloud, and FortiSandbox PaaS WEB UI that may allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute unauthorized code or commands via HTTP requests. On the other hand, CVE-2026-34260 could be exploited by an attacker to inject malicious SQL statements and potentially impact the confidentiality and availability of the application. However, since the affected code only allows read access to data, the vulnerability does not compromise the integrity of the application. "It allows a low-privileged, authenticated attacker to inject malicious SQL code via user-controlled input, potentially exposing sensitive database information and crashing the application," Pathlock said. Patches have also been released by Broadcom for a high-severity flaw in VMware Fusion (CVE-2026-41702, CVSS score: 7.8) that could pave the way for local privilege escalation. The issue has been addressed in version 26H1. "VMware Fusion contains a TOCTOU (Time-of-check Time-of-use) vulnerability that occurs during an operation performed by a SETUID binary," Broadcom said. Microsoft August 2025 Patch Tuesday Fixes Kerberos Zero-Day Among 111 Total New Flaws
Microsoft on Tuesday rolled out fixes for a massive set of 111 security flaws across its software portfolio, including one flaw that has been disclosed as publicly known at the time of the release. Of the 111 vulnerabilities, 16 are rated Critical, 92 are rated Important, two are rated Moderate, and one is rated Low in severity. Forty-four of the vulnerabilities relate to privilege escalation, followed by remote code execution (35), information disclosure (18), spoofing (8), and denial-of-service (4) defects. This is in addition to 16 vulnerabilities addressed in Microsoft's Chromium-based Edge browser since the release of last month's Patch Tuesday update, including two spoofing bugs affecting Edge for Android. Included among the vulnerabilities is a privilege escalation vulnerability impacting Microsoft Exchange Server hybrid deployments (CVE-2025-53786, CVSS score: 8.0) that Microsoft disclosed last week. The publicly disclosed zero-day is CVE-2025-53779 (CVSS score: 7.2), another privilege escalation flaw in Windows Kerberos that stems from a case of relative path traversal. Akamai researcher Yuval Gordon has been credited with discovering and reporting the bug. It's worth mentioning here that the issue was documented in detail back in May 2025 by the web infrastructure and security company, giving it the codename BadSuccessor. The novel technique essentially allows a threat actor with sufficient privileges to compromise an Active Directory (AD) domain by misusing delegated Managed Service Account (dMSA) objects. "The good news here is that successful exploitation of CVE-2025-53779 requires an attacker to have pre-existing control of two attributes of the hopefully well protected dMSA: msds-groupMSAMembership, which determines which users may use credentials for the managed service account, and msds-ManagedAccountPrecededByLink, which contains a list of users on whose behalf the dMSA can act," Adam Barnett, lead software engineer at Rapid7, told The Hacker News. "However, abuse of CVE-2025-53779 is certainly plausible as the final link of a multi-exploit chain which stretches from no access to total pwnage." Action1's Mike Walters noted that the path traversal flaw can be abused by an attacker to create improper delegation relationships, enabling them to impersonate privileged accounts, escalate to a domain administrator, and potentially gain full control of the Active Directory domain. "An attacker who already has a compromised privileged account can use it to move from limited administrative rights to full domain control," Walters added. "It can also be paired with methods such as Kerberoasting or Silver Ticket attacks to maintain persistence." "With domain administrator privileges, attackers can disable security monitoring, modify Group Policy, and tamper with audit logs to hide their activity. In multi-forest environments or organizations with partner connections, this flaw could even be leveraged to move from one compromised domain to others in a supply chain attack." Satnam Narang, senior staff research engineer at Tenable, said the immediate impact of BadSuccessor is limited, as only 0.7% of Active Directory domains had met the prerequisite at the time of disclosure. "To exploit BadSuccessor, an attacker must have at least one domain controller in a domain running Windows Server 2025 in order to achieve domain compromise," Narang pointed out. Check Point, which disclosed CVE-2025-53766 alongside CVE-2025-30388, said the vulnerabilities allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on the affected system, leading to a full system compromise. "The attack vector involves interacting with a specially crafted file. When a user opens or processes this file, the vulnerability is triggered, allowing the attacker to take control," the cybersecurity company said. The Israeli firm revealed that it also uncovered a vulnerability in a Rust-based component of the Windows kernel that can result in a system crash that, in turn, triggers a hard reboot. "For organizations with large or remote workforces, the risk is significant: attackers could exploit this flaw to simultaneously crash numerous computers across an enterprise, resulting in widespread disruption and costly downtime," Check Point said. "This discovery highlights that even with advanced security technologies like Rust, continuous vigilance and proactive patching are essential to maintaining system integrity in a complex software environment." Another vulnerability of importance is CVE-2025-50154 (CVSS score: 6.5), an NTLM hash disclosure spoofing vulnerability that's actually a bypass for a similar bug (CVE-2025-24054, CVSS score: 6.5) that was plugged by Microsoft in March 2025. "The original vulnerability demonstrated how specially crafted requests could trigger NTLM authentication and expose sensitive credentials," Cymulate researcher Ruben Enkaoua said. "This new vulnerability [...] allows an attacker to extract NTLM hashes without any user interaction, even on fully patched systems. By exploiting a subtle gap left in the mitigation, an attacker can trigger NTLM authentication requests automatically, enabling offline cracking or relay attacks to gain unauthorized access."
