The hardest part of agentic AI may be rebuilding the business
The hardest part of agentic AI may be rebuilding the business Organizations expect AI agents to change how work gets done, driving productivity and growth while allowing employees to focus on higher-value tasks. Few, however, have the processes and workflows needed to realize those benefits, according to Deloitte’s latest research. Preparing the operating model for AI agents About half of surveyed leaders say they understand how AI agents will affect their future operating model. Three main challenges limit wider adoption: the lack of a unified and accessible data foundation, limited trust in and governance of AI agents, and the cost and complexity of integration. AI adoption also remains constrained by issues related to data, decision-making, governance, organizational design, workforce readiness, and costs. Fewer than half of surveyed leaders say their organizations are prepared for agentic AI across most areas of the business. Workforce readiness and business processes rank as the weakest areas, indicating that organizations still need to develop new ways of working with AI agents. “AI transformation includes moving beyond one-off fixes to a sustained focus on improving work outcomes. Limited, layered-on approaches may create the sense of getting ahead with quick wins, but in reality, they may not be enough,” said Laura Shact, U.S. Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) AI growth leader at Deloitte. “Thriving in the agentic future will require more. True transformation asks for more than just alignment with technology and data strategies, but also investments in work and organization design, as well as intentional leadership and workforce enablement.” Leaders expect AI agents to change business processes and the workforce over the next four years. They anticipate processes being redesigned around the technology to support real-time decision-making and greater autonomy, while agents work across business functions to complete complex, multistep tasks with people primarily providing oversight. Redesigning processes around AI agents Only 16% of leaders say their organizations’ processes are ready for agentic AI, with just 5% describing them as highly prepared. Even for organizations that have deployed AI agents at scale, readiness remains limited, with 46% reporting that their business processes are prepared. Executives and AI and data science leaders attribute the lack of readiness to poorly documented processes, fragmented data and systems, entrenched ways of working, and limited AI expertise among executives and employees. Only one in five say their organizations are prepared to redesign business processes to operate autonomously with AI agents. Many organizations are introducing AI agents into existing workflows instead of redesigning processes from the ground up. This layered approach may offer a quicker path to short-term payback while helping organizations build experience and credibility with the technology. Long-term value is expected to depend on redesigning business processes around AI agents, a transition likely to take several years. About 31% of surveyed organizations expect at least half of their business processes to be redesigned or rebuilt around AI agents within two years. The figure rises to 74% over the next four years. Few organizations say their business processes and workforce are ready for agentic AI (Source: Deloitte) Job disruption is expected to accelerate Business leaders anticipate changes to job requirements, training needs, roles and how employees work with AI. About 43% expect a lot to extreme job disruption within the next 12 to 18 months. Executives expect routine and structured tasks to become automated, while creative, strategic and high-judgment work will continue to require human involvement. Employees may direct AI agents, review their output, validate quality and determine when human judgment is required. Organizations are preparing workers for this shift through AI literacy programs and targeted training for roles likely to be affected. About 71% report providing baseline AI-agent literacy training, while 65% are targeting upskilling or reskilling toward roles expected to grow or change because of agentic AI. Half of surveyed leaders say their organizations are not investing enough in the workforce changes needed to support AI agent adoption. Rising infrastructure and usage costs can add pressure as companies allocate resources between technology and workforce investments. Governance will play a key role in defining these working arrangements, including which decisions agents can make, when people should intervene, who is responsible for outcomes and how tasks move between employees and AI agents.

153GB of stolen credentials surface after LiteLLM supply chain attack
153GB of stolen credentials surface after LiteLLM supply chain attack A massive 153GB archive stolen during the LiteLLM supply chain attack exposes credentials and other sensitive data linked to thousands of corporate domains, including AWS, Samsung, Cisco, and Salesforce. Hudson Rock says it obtained and analyzed the archive, which contains 433,909 files, and attributed 118,829 CI runner dumps to 2,488 corporate domains. “We are leveraging this data for a global ethical disclosure effort,” Alon Gal, Hudson Rock’s co-founder and CTO, told Help Net Security. “We see this as an opportunity to help organizations respond proactively before threat actors weaponize the data publicly.” LiteLLM is an open-source proxy gateway that developers use to route requests to different AI models. The LiteLLM breach had its roots in an earlier compromise of Trivy, a popular open-source vulnerability scanner. On March 19, 2026, TeamPCP, a cybercriminal group that emerged in late 2025, used stolen credentials to publish a compromised version of Trivy. LiteLLM’s build pipeline installed Trivy automatically, giving the poisoned scanner read access to the runner environment and allowing the attackers to steal the project’s PyPI publishing tokens. Using those tokens, TeamPCP published two malicious LiteLLM releases, versions 1.82.7 and 1.82.8, to the Python Package Index on March 24. “The key takeaway is how supply chains have evolved to make a single upstream breach affect thousands of companies simultaneously. A window of roughly 40 minutes in which the LiteLLM dependency was hacked led to over 430,000 instances in which millions of secrets were harvested,” Gal said. Tracing exposed secrets back to their owners The dataset contains information linked to organizations including NVIDIA, Volkswagen, Microsoft, FedEx, S&P Global, John Deere, Epic Games, Orange, TomTom, BT Group, ServiceNow, Deloitte, and Siemens. Screenshots published with the research show AWS secret access keys, Salesforce client secrets, Slack signing secrets, Azure environment variables, and AI provider API keys captured during pipeline execution. A trove of internal corporate secrets (Source: Hudson Rock) CloudSEK, working from a separate dataset built from about 434,000 stolen files, put the number of exposed organizations at close to 2,500. The company stressed that its figures reflect exposure rather than confirmed breaches. “I’ve confirmed the data is legit by the way, multiple victim orgs,” security researcher Kevin Beaumont said. “It contains a significant volume of sensitive content at orgs. It’s a massive supply chain breach due to poor AI security—not because AI is the threat, but teens can run circles around orgs obsessed with rushing out AI and poor DevOps security.” “Identifying the victims within this 153GB database presents a unique threat intelligence challenge. Accurate attribution requires looking past the surface level to analyze the actual infrastructure boundaries,” Hudson Rock noted. In one case, a leaked pipeline was tied to a committer email at SiriusXM, but infrastructure markers in the same dump, including a self-hosted GitLab instance at gitlab.adswizz.com, pointed to AdsWizz, a SiriusXM subsidiary. Hudson Rock said correct identification depends on “hard infrastructure markers rather than simple committer emails.” A large share of the dumped files have no obvious owner. According to Hudson Rock, some contain database passwords, third-party API keys, and cloud credentials without a company email address, custom domain, or internal server name that could identify the organization they came from. This means organizations may have exposed credentials in the dataset without knowing they are affected. Organizations urged to act before stolen data leaks Hudson Rock is urging organizations using AI proxy infrastructure, third-party CI/CD vulnerability scanners, or downstream AI packages to audit their environments for LiteLLM versions 1.82.7 and 1.82.8 and treat any secrets accessible to the LiteLLM environment as compromised. Organizations should also rotate cloud IAM keys and access tokens, review audit logs for anomalous activity dating back to March 24, and check for unauthorized .pth files and suspicious systemd services. “While we cannot disclose how we obtained this data, it is not leaked anywhere at the moment and is not circulating widely. This makes it a critical window of opportunity for companies to rotate keys and secrets before it eventually leaks, as is the natural cycle of a breach,” Gal added. Despite the scale of the breach, some organizations appear to be treating the exposure with less urgency than the findings warrant. “These creds date from about March. One of the orgs impacted told me they’d rotated them all and it’s a nothingburger, so I looked at their responsible disclosure policy, it allows trying creds, so I tried them all. Almost every one worked. Submitted report. One of the biggest US techcos,” Beaumont wrote. “This magnitude pushes us into a completely new world regarding the type of response required from the cybersecurity industry,” Gal concluded.

Financial groups lay out a plan to fight AI identity attacks
Financial groups lay out a plan to fight AI identity attacks Generative AI tools have brought the cost of deepfake production low enough that criminals and state-sponsored actors now use them routinely against financial institutions. A joint paper from the American Bankers Association, the Better Identity Coalition, and the Financial Services Sector Coordinating Council lays out the scale of the problem and calls on federal and state policymakers to act across various areas. Deepfake incidents in the fintech sector increased 700% in 2023 compared to 2022. Deloitte’s Center for Financial Services projects that AI-enabled fraud losses in the United States could reach $40 billion by 2027, up from $12.3 billion in 2023, a compound annual growth rate of 32%. In 2021, 42% of Suspicious Activity Reports filed under the Bank Secrecy Act were tied to identity or authentication compromise. Ten attack categories are currently targeting financial institutions, including deepfakes used against identity verification systems, AI-generated phishing campaigns, synthetic identity creation, real-time deepfake fraud, and the use of AI agents for account takeovers. Why phishing is scaling so fast LLMs can automate the entire phishing process. That automation cuts the cost of phishing attacks by more than 95% and produces success rates equal to or greater than manually crafted campaigns. Sixty percent of people have fallen victim to AI-automated phishing, according to research cited in the report. Legacy authentication vulnerabilities are now compounded by what AI enables. SMS-based one-time passcodes and push-based authenticator apps are phishable. Passwords are phishable. AI tools allow adversaries to exploit those weaknesses at a scale and speed that was previously uneconomical. What policymakers are being asked to do The recommendations are organized into four initiatives. The first covers identity proofing and verification. A Treasury Department-led task force would coordinate federal, state, and local agencies on closing the gap between physical credentials and their digital equivalents. Mobile driver’s licenses, which use asymmetric public key cryptography, are identified as one viable path. A deepfake cannot spoof possession of a private cryptographic key, which makes cryptography-based credentials resistant to current AI-generated attacks. Expanding the Social Security Administration’s Electronic Consent-Based Social Security Number Verification system, known as eCBSV, is also on the list. The system is currently limited to a subset of credit-related financial services. Opening it to account opening, background checks, and other identity validation use cases would give financial institutions and other organizations a way to verify identities against an authoritative government source. Further actions in this initiative include federal grants to help states modernize identity infrastructure, new attribute validation services at the IRS, State Department, and U.S. Postal Service, a digital passport option for Americans, authority for USPS to offer in-person identity verification services, and updated NIST guidance on biometric algorithms and liveness detection technology. The second initiative covers authentication. Regulators would be encouraged to push financial institutions toward phishing-resistant authentication, specifically FIDO security keys and passkeys, for both internal systems and customer-facing applications. Policymakers would also be asked to avoid creating restrictions that limit the use of data analytics for risk-based fraud detection. Jeremy Grant, coordinator of the Better Identity Coalition, told Help Net Security that passkey adoption is stronger than it may appear given how recently the technology arrived at scale. “We didn’t really see passkeys start to emerge at scale in the consumer space until late 2023, and the fact that most consumers now know what they are not even three years later is notable, given how long it takes most new technology to find its way to consumers,” Grant said. Grant pointed to a persistent misconception that complicates adoption efforts. Some people believe going passwordless makes them less secure, a view shaped by decades of guidance telling people to create strong, unique passwords. “That has not been an effective cybersecurity tool for a long time now, but that doesn’t mean your average consumer understands this,” Grant said. A public awareness campaign around phishing-resistant authentication is one of the report’s final recommendations, in part to address that gap. The third initiative covers international coordination. NIST, DHS, and Treasury would engage with counterparts in the European Union and other countries on digital wallet interoperability and standards. China and other adversaries are active in international standards bodies that cover digital identity and authentication, and U.S. participation in those bodies is constrained by budget and staffing limitations. The fourth initiative covers public education, including a campaign for Treasury to run with CISA and financial institutions on deepfake threats, and a separate public awareness effort around passkeys and other phishing-resistant tools. The regulatory gap Financial institutions operate under Bank Secrecy Act requirements for customer identity verification and under Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council guidance for authentication. Both are areas where regulators need to issue updated guidance to give institutions confidence in using newer credential technologies to meet existing compliance requirements. Grant said the threat extends well beyond financial services. “Deepfakes are not a sector-specific problem but a national problem,” he said. “It’s the same organized criminals and hostile nation-states exploiting the same core deficiencies in identity and authentication infrastructure to steal from banks, fintechs, health, retailers, cryptocurrency players, and government.” Grant identified four of the 20 recommendations as having the broadest cross-sector impact: the state infrastructure grant program tied to NIST guidance, expanding eCBSV access, accelerating NIST’s liveness detection guidance, and creating a multi-agency task force to monitor AI-driven identity threats. He also noted interest in HR 7270, the Stop Identity Fraud and Identity Theft Act of 2026, which would have Treasury run a grant program covering both financial sector security and fraud in government benefits distribution. The recommendations are scoped to actions achievable within two to three years, with the authors citing past examples of large-scale identity initiatives that failed to gain traction due to complexity.

That has exposed a significant gap between what AI agents can do and what security teams can observe or control. Cybersecurity is now the price of admission for industrial AI Industrial organizations are accelerating AI deployment across manufacturing, utilities, and transportation and running straight into a security problem. Cisco’s 2026 State of Industrial AI Report, based on responses from more than 1,000 decision-makers across 19 countries, finds that cybersecurity has become the single largest obstacle to AI adoption, outranking skills gaps, integration challenges, and budget constraints. Cybersecurity professionals are burning out on extra hours every week Cybersecurity professionals in the U.S. are working an average of 10.8 extra hours per week beyond their contracted schedules, according to survey data collected from 300 cybersecurity and IT leaders by Sapio Research. That figure effectively adds a sixth working day to the standard week for a large portion of the field. Nearly half of respondents reported working 11 or more overtime hours weekly, and one in five logged more than 16 additional hours. The vulnerability that turns your AI agent against you Zenity Labs disclosed PleaseFix, a family of critical vulnerabilities affecting agentic browsers, including Perplexity Comet, that allow attackers to hijack AI agents, access local files, and steal credentials within authenticated user sessions. The vulnerabilities can be triggered through malicious content embedded in routine workflows, enabling unauthorized actions without user awareness. Threat actors weaponize OAuth redirection logic to deliver malware An ongoing phishing campaign is abusing the OAuth authentication redirection mechanism to avoid triggering conventional email and browser defenses, Microsoft researchers have revealed. The attackers are targeting government and public-sector organizations, and redirecting unsuspecting users from trusted login pages to their own infrastructure, to serve malware or capture login credentials. Coruna: Spy-grade iOS exploit kit powering financial crime A powerful iOS exploit kit has circulated among multiple threat actors over the past year, moving from a commercial surveillance operation to state-linked espionage campaigns and, ultimately, ended into the hands of financially motivated hackers, according to new research from Google’s Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG). Over 1,200 IceWarp servers still vulnerable to unauthenticated RCE flaw (CVE-2025-14500) A critical RCE vulnerability (CVE-2025-14500) in IceWarp, an EU-made business communication and collaboration platform, may be exploited by attackers to gain unauthorized access to exposed unpatched servers. Iran-linked APT targets US critical sectors with new backdoors An Iran-linked hacking group has been active inside the networks of several US organizations since early February, raising concerns that the activity could precede broader cyber operations connected to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Why workforce identity is still a vulnerability, and what to do about it Most organizations believe they have workforce identity under control. New hires are verified. Accounts are provisioned. Multi-factor authentication is enforced. Audits are passed. Then a breach happens, often through an account that was “properly secured.” But the problem can be traced back to the fact that identity verification, provisioning, authentication, and recovery operate as separate events, not a continuous system of trust. Engineering trust: A security blueprint for autonomous AI agents AI agents have evolved from just chatbots, answering questions to executing actions using various integrated tools, often autonomously, and as such the traditional security models have become less efficient. A single malicious instruction hidden in a webpage (that the agent processes), can manipulate that agent into performing unintended actions or leaking sensitive data. March 2026 Patch Tuesday forecast: Is AI security an oxymoron? Developers and analysts are using more AI tools to produce code and to test both the performance and security of the finished products. They are also embedding AI functionality in their products directly. But just how secure are these AI tools and routines themselves? Recent reports show they suffer from vulnerabilities just like any other code. When cyber threats start thinking for themselves In this Help Net Security video, Jason Rivera, Field CISO & Head of Solution Engineering at SimSpace, discusses how autonomous AI agents are changing cyber threats. Drawing on experience in the US Army, NSA, Deloitte, and CrowdStrike, he describes how security teams have traditionally measured risk through volume, speed, and sophistication. Why phishing still works today In this Help Net Security video, Gal Livschitz, Senior Penetration Tester at Terra Security, explains how phishing has evolved and why employees still fall for it. Tufin’s AI-powered tools simplify network security operations
Tufin’s AI-powered tools simplify network security operations Tufin announced its latest AI-powered innovations, enabling customers to utilize its Unified Control Plane to accelerate issue resolution, reduce operational friction, and limit risk – even as network complexity continues to grow. Security teams face pressure to move faster while maintaining a secure network environment. The complexity of the network makes it harder and harder to keep tabs on where potential problems are and opens up opportunities for attackers using advanced AI tools to take advantage of the situation. In response, enterprises have turned to AI solutions for help. In Deloitte’s recent “The State of AI in the Enterprise” report, a quarter of enterprise leaders say “…that AI is having a transformative effect on their companies – more than double from a year ago.” In fact, as OpenAI found in its “The State of Enterprise AI” report, that transformative effect is real, as “…75% of workers report that using AI at work has improved either the speed or quality of their output.” TufinAI-powered solutions empower organizations to use AI to meet these enterprise challenges head-on, accessing insights, answering critical questions, and taking action using natural-language tools, all without relying on manual processes or specialized solution expertise. By using AI to make it easier for teams to access and understand their network’s security posture, potential vulnerabilities and points of attack can be revealed, enabling better-informed decisions to be made at a speed that matches or exceeds that of attackers. Better network data leads to quicker response times, proactive actions, and continuous network protection. “At Tufin, we’re dedicated to eliminating the historically accepted tradeoff between security, customization, and ease-of-use,” said Shay Dayan, Tufin’s SVP of Products and Engineering. “The combination of advanced AI-powered tools with our Unified Control Plane helps teams simplify network security operations, remove friction from workflows, and scale without additional resources. As network complexity grows, it is our job to accelerate AI innovations that can make it easier to understand and manage.” Four new AI-powered assistants have been launched, covering rules, devices, compliance exceptions, and access requests. Built on the company’s embedded AI engine, TufinAI, these innovations are designed to accelerate network security operations, simplify intricate workflows, and improve operational efficiency across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. In addition, today the company also announced the launch of the TufinAI Executive Dashboard, which provides the answer to the long-time industry issue of static, fixed and “one-size-fits-all” security dashboards. Tufin’s latest AI-powered innovation enables users to use natural-language prompts to customize the data incorporated and presented, making it easy to answer key questions including, “are we secure?” or “where are we at risk?” Expanding the TufinAI assistant portfolio Tufin continues to expand its portfolio of AI-powered assistants, each designed to eliminate common operational bottlenecks and streamline day-to-day security tasks. In addition to its successful TufinMate AI assistants for IT, SOC, and Network Security Engineers, the following new AI assistants have been added: TufinAI Assistant Rule Search enables teams to quickly locate and understand relevant security rules using natural-language queries. It helps teams to collaborate faster and speed decision-making. TufinAI Assistant Device Search allows users to instantly find devices and related policy context, on their networks, without having to navigate complex interfaces. This assistant helps teams to troubleshoot faster and reduce manual inventory filtering. TufinAI Assistant for Unified Security Policy (USP) Exception Search helps teams rapidly identify, view, and analyze compliance exceptions within an organization’s master network security policy. This assistant simplifies rule exception management, reduces risk, and improves overall security policy hygiene by identifying policy violations and security gaps more efficiently. TufinAI Assistant Access Request allows users to request network access changes and provide additional information via natural-language prompts. Change requests and approvals are automated, saving time and making the process more efficient. The combination of TufinMate with these new TufinAI assistants help security teams work faster, reduce manual effort, and make more confident, risk-aware decisions, regardless of role or level of expertise. Total visibility with the TufinAI Executive Dashboard Tufin’s new TufinAI Executive Dashboard addresses a longstanding challenge in security operations: static, one-size-fits-all reporting that fails to meet the needs of different teams and stakeholders. Tufin now makes it possible for any user to create customized dashboard views using natural-language prompts, eliminating the need to engage a company’s development team in a time-consuming process and speeding time-to-value. By dynamically shaping insights around each team’s specific KPIs, the dashboard provides real-time visibility into security posture, risk, and change impact across today’s hybrid environments. Key use cases include: Security posture visibility and risk assessment Incident investigation and response Change impact analysis and approval acceleration Audit and compliance reporting with executive-ready views Operational monitoring at scale, as environments grow and evolve By eliminating manual reporting and fixed views, the dashboard helps teams detect issues faster, prioritize high-risk changes, improve audit readiness, and increase confidence for both security leaders and executives.

AI breaks the old security playbook
AI breaks the old security playbook AI has moved into enterprise operations faster than many security programs expected. It is embedded in workflows, physical systems, and core infrastructure. Some AI tools reach hundreds of millions of users each week. Inference costs have fallen 280 fold, but overall spending is still rising because usage keeps growing. Attackers are using the same tools. CISOs manage a broader attack surface driven by automation, new data paths, and machine led decisions. Deloitte’s Tech Trends 2026 shows how this shift is changing what CISOs and other technology leaders are responsible for. New exposure in core workflows AI has moved from experimentation into daily use, supporting core processes across engineering, customer operations, finance, and supply chain. As a result, new exposure points are forming at the center of the business. CISOs and CIOs point to four areas where risk is most visible. Data, models, applications, and infrastructure each introduce different failure paths. LLMs and related systems concentrate sensitive information in fewer places. This raises the impact of data governance gaps. Model behavior can be altered through poisoning or manipulation of training data. Application interfaces such as plugins and APIs increase the number of access points attackers can target. AI infrastructure adds complexity because compute, data, and orchestration operate together rather than as separate layers. Agentic AI introduces governance gaps Enterprises are testing a wide range of agentic AI use cases. Only 11% report that agents are in production. Another 38% are running pilots, while 35% have no agentic strategy. The gap between pilot and production reflects limits in process and governance rather than gaps in technology. CIOs and CFOs interviewed for the publication described a common challenge. Workflows were designed for human judgment and human paced decisions. When agents are placed into these environments, they lack the structure needed to operate reliably. This often results in partial automation that adds noise instead of value. CISOs need to account for this during policy and control design. Agent identity, access, and oversight require the same discipline applied to other operational assets. Logging, audit trails, and review processes need to be defined before deployment. Existing software development life cycle controls still apply, but they must operate at higher speed and include consistent testing, including red teaming. Infrastructure becomes a risk facote Inference economics are changing how organizations plan compute. Token costs have dropped sharply, but spending remains high as adoption expands. Organizations are moving toward hybrid models that spread workloads across cloud, on premises systems, and edge environments. Each layer adds its own security concerns. Robots, autonomous vehicles, and connected devices are part of daily operations. BMW and Amazon run environments where physical systems navigate routes and manage tasks on their own. Each connected system becomes part of the enterprise trust boundary. A compromised device can disrupt operations and open paths into more sensitive systems. CISOs will need to extend familiar security practices into these environments. Segmentation, network isolation, supply chain review, and configuration management still matter. The difference is scale. These controls apply to fleets of autonomous components rather than to static infrastructure. “Innovation is compounding. Forces aren’t simply additive, but multiplicative. Better technology enables more applications. More applications generate more data. More data attracts more investment. More investment builds better infrastructure. Each improvement simultaneously accelerates all the others. We’re seeing the S-curves compress in real time, and the distance between emerging and mainstream is collapsing. That’s the reality technology leaders are navigating,” said Kelly Raskovich, emerging technology leader and Tech Trends executive editor, Deloitte. AI as a tool for strengthening defense AI driven attacks continue to increase in speed. CISOs can use AI to support defense at the same pace. Automated red teaming can surface weaknesses earlier in development. Adversarial testing can harden models against manipulation. Detection systems that operate without human delay can reduce dwell time and limit lateral movement. Technology leaders cited several practices that produce results. They focus on defined problems rather than broad experimentation. They work with business teams to set outcomes. They use controlled pilots to understand where AI adds value and where it adds risk. This gives security teams a role early in design instead of forcing them into late stage review. The shift in leadership roles Responsibilities across technology leadership are expanding. CIOs are taking on coordination roles for AI across the enterprise. CDOs and CTOs are defining data and architectural foundations alongside them. CISOs are becoming more integrated into these decisions. Their role includes influencing design choices, overseeing identity models for both people and AI agents, and guiding organizations toward structures that reduce exposure. Survey data referenced in the publication shows that technology leadership spans CIOs, CTOs, chief data analytics officers, and CISOs. This reflects how tightly AI, data, architecture, and security are connected.

CISO Conversations: Are Microsoft’s Deputy CISOs a Signpost to the Future?
During 2024, Microsoft unveiled a new Deputy CISO (dCISO ) strategy as part of its broader Secure Future Initiative (SFI). To understand the reasons and potential for this evolution of the CISO role, we spoke to Ann Johnson (Corporate Vice President and Deputy CISO) and Mark Russinovich (CTO, Deputy CISO and Technical Fellow, Azure). Microsoft’s deputy CISO strategy When Igor Tsyganskiy became corporate CISO at the end of 2023, he decided he needed specialist assistance in specialized areas. Microsoft is a massive and massively complex organization, and every aspect of the CISO role is equally larger in scale and scope. The result, introduced through 2024, is a total of 14 dCISOs handling risk across the different functions within Microsoft. Each one reports to Tsyganskiy and, where relevant, the head of the product or service concerned. “I am responsible for the customer security management office – the CSMO,” explains Johnson. “We are responsible for all external engagement for the office of the CISO.” Other dCISOs are aligned to the core Microsoft products, but the company also gets inbound requests from customers and partners. How does Microsoft secure itself? Can we benchmark against Microsoft? How do you do threat hunting? What products do you use? “All those questions come up regularly,” she continues, “So my function is responsible for being the front door to help our customers with their relationship with Microsoft’s Office of the CISO – to make sure we’re sharing and benchmarking and doing industry best practices and doing threat intelligence sharing. My job is to keep the product-aligned dCISOs doing their day jobs but bring them into the conversations as needed.” Russinovich is one of these product-aligned dCISOs. “Igor decided he needed dCISOs as part of a body that were experts in their local domains and affiliated with the product groups or the horizontal services that they would be serving,” he explains. The result may seem complex, but the purpose is to facilitate the correct information to the correct destination. Apart from coming under the remit of the global CISO (Tsyganskiy), the product-aligned dCISOs also report to the senior business leader for their own product. Russinovich is dCISO for Azure. “So, I report to Scott Guthrie, who’s the executive vice president that leads the cloud and AI division at Microsoft,” he adds. Guthrie reports to Satya Nadella. Azure may be a central product, but there are also horizontal aspects associated with Azure spanning multiple product groups – and the dCISO concept of individual experts in specific areas can appear to become confused. “I’m also the dCISO for core operating systems, given my background with Windows and Linux. And in a third area, I am responsible for engineering systems – which spans multiple groups, and on which the whole company depends.” These latter responsibilities are an example of the horizontal element of the dCISO program. While it all may appear incredibly complex, it is nevertheless designed to provide clarity. The purpose is to ensure individual product business leaders get focused but expert information about their own responsibilities, while the overall company – right up to Nadella – gets a complete and integrated picture of the company’s security posture for both it and its products. Are Deputy CISOs the future for the CISO role? Are Microsoft’s dCISOs signposting the future for the CISO function? The answer seems to be yes, in principle at least, if not necessarily at the scale of Microsoft’s program. “Igor is having CEO level conversations,” comments Johnson. “He is meeting with senior executives in governments and organizations globally, as well as running Microsoft’s core security program. He is involved in governance; he is involved in risk; he is involved in compliance. All CISOs have a very expansive scope.” But, she adds, “If you combine that scope with the scale and complexity of Microsoft as an organization, with all the different platforms we have, and all the different communities we serve globally, and all the different products we bring to market… the job is too complex.” Russinovich says much the same. “Microsoft is a massive company in terms of employees, products and services. It’s impossible for one person to be an expert in all of this, whether it’s security or anything else. Some of the risk decisions require familiarity and deep expertise, as well as the bandwidth ability to have deep conversations with the different engineering leaders they’re working with.” This, he says, is something that a single CISO cannot do. “It’s just not humanly possible. So, Igor is distributing the responsibilities in a way that will let us scale and still have the big governance and accountability covering the whole company. You can think of the dCISOs as the CISO for the domains assigned to them.” Johnson agrees. “I posit that most of our dCISOs are functional CISOs. And in other works, they would be called the CISO, because of the scope and scale of their responsibilities.” Microsoft may be unique in its size and complexity. But the difficulties faced by its CISO, Igor Tsyganskiy, are the same as those faced by all CISOs – just writ much larger. The expansion of the CISO role from governance (security), to include compliance (legal), internal app and external product development (engineering), integration with business leaders (business knowledge and communication skills), artificial intelligence (data scientist) and more, implies the solution adopted Tsyganskiy should be considered by all CISOs. The basic concept isn’t entirely new. In recent years, there has been a growth in Business Information Security Officers {BISOs). “Large, global banks have long had the concept of the BISO,” says Johnson. “They would have a BISO for retail banking, or a BISO for high net worth. I do see more organizations structuring themselves in this way as the world gets more complex and as organizations grow.” The need for intermediary domain experts exists. These intermediaries may not be called dCISOs (or BISOs) in smaller companies, but for larger and more complex companies, Microsoft’s dCISO program is mapping an attractive way forward. What does it take to be a Deputy CISO at Microsoft? Johnson believes her start in cyber was a bit accidental. Although she had an interest in technology, her academic career was in political science. After college, she worked for a few tech companies (“I needed a job,” she says), but not in cyber. But it wasn’t fulfilling. “I decided I wanted to do something different, and at the time, I had a company RSA Security hardware token for VPN access. I’m a technologist at heart. I find I’m passionate about technology and learning new things. So, I went and learned everything I could about this RSA Security hardware token and how it worked. I applied for a job at RSA Security, and I was lucky – they hired me in 2000.” She was now in cyber, and her career took off. After 13 years, she was VP, global IPV & global accounts at RSA. She moved to Qualys as president and COO, and then Boundless Spatial as CEO. From there, she moved to Microsoft as general manager of the enterprise cybersecurity group in 2015 and continued up the ladder until she became corporate VP and deputy CISO in 2024. Russinovich’s entry into cyber was based on a litany of academic qualifications in computers and engineering. The passion had started earlier when he got his hands on an Apple II. That kicked him off, and he decided he wanted to learn as much as he could about the internal workings of computers. “I went to Carnegie Mellon and got a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. I got a master’s degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and then went back to CMU for a PhD in electrical and computer engineering.” After an academic career that spanned almost a decade, he ventured into industry to understand commercial computers. “That’s when I started to develop my understanding and knowledge of the internals of Windows 3.1, 95, NT, and Windows 2000.” In 1996 he co-founded and was chief security architect for Winternals. Winternals understood the inner workings of Windows and developed tools to let admins get deep into the OS and do things that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. One of these tools was Sysinternals. During this time, he developed strong connections with Microsoft, so when MS acquired Winternals in 2006, they got Russinovich as well – initially as an architect in the Windows division working on the kernel and on taking Windows to ARM processors. At the same time, he became increasingly interested in the cloud and a new small Azure group within the company. “I saw that the cloud represented a huge opportunity to create, effectively, the world’s operating system. Azure launched in February 2010. By July 2010 I had joined Azure.” By 2014, he had become CTO for Azure, and by 2024 he was CTO, deputy CISO, and technical fellow at Microsoft Azure. Despite their different paths and different careers, both Johnson and Russinovich have achieved elevated positions in security leadership within Microsoft. It is worth considering what they each believe are the primary qualities that enable such achievement. “Agility, flexibility and resilience,” says Johnson. “This job isn’t always fun, and the threats change and evolve every day. You need a strong sense of who you are. You need to be willing to go with the flow and you must be really resilient. People who last long term are all of these.” Russinovich believes it is the ability to communicate and collaborate. “You have to work across many stakeholders, so the ability to communicate and collaborate is essential,” he says. “If you alienate people, which I’ve seen happening… if you alienate your stakeholders, you become ineffective.” It is encouraging that both top Microsoft dCISOs believe that such career success can be achieved by anyone with the right attitude. “Personally, I like to understand technology to a deep level. But it isn’t absolutely essential,” explains Russinovich. “You can delegate things, just like Igor is delegating his need for deep understanding of everything to a pool of dCISOs. Some level of technical understanding will always be crucial, because otherwise you’re just completely disconnected. But I think you can be an effective CISO without being as technically deep as I personally like to be.” Johnson agrees that you can have a successful career in cyber without prior cyber qualifications. “You need to have the aptitude. You need to be willing to learn every day. You need to be willing to accept what you don’t know, and you need to network,” she says. “Go to Black Hat, go to RSAC, take some SANS courses, take some LinkedIn Learning courses… whatever you need to understand the industry fundamentals. Then you decide your best fit. Cyber isn’t just forensics or reverse engineering. There are cybersecurity marketers, cybersecurity lawyers, cybersecurity HR, cybersecurity executives, cybersecurity PR and more. Think about where you can fit to get started; but don’t be so narrow that you think, ‘Oh, I’m not a deep cyber technical person, so I can’t work in cybersecurity’. Cybersecurity is an entire industry with every domain, so think about where your skills fit, and invest in learning.” Advice Good advice is a useful career tool, especially when good advice is heeded. We asked these two dCISOs to explain the best career advice they had received, and what advice they would give to emerging and potential future leaders. Russinovich believes the best advice he ever received came from his father: ‘when you find something you’re interested in, learn as much about it as possible.’ “That,” he adds, “is what inspired me to go get a PhD in computers.” Confirmation that this is, indeed, good career advice comes from Johnson’s progression. Her cyber career kicked off when she became interested in a hardware token (‘I went and learned everything I could about this RSA Security hardware token and how it worked’). Johnson herself believes the best advice she received came from a leader when she was new to management: ‘People don’t understand the impact of what they say.’ “I didn’t understand what he meant at first, but then I realized I needed to modify my standard direct form of communication. I had to remember that communication is all about the receiver, and I had to learn to adapt my communication style so that the receiver understood what I was saying, as opposed to treating everyone the same way and running people over. So, learning how to communicate effectively is one of the most important things anyone can learn in their career.” For advice he would give to someone with ambition for leadership in cybersecurity, Russinovich continues his emphasis on learning. “Right now, I would say go learn about artificial intelligence: its current state, its strengths, and its limitations. Understand how it is applied, because it’s part of every single job. AI is front and center right now – that is what I would highly recommend.” Johnson’s first advice is to understand that you don’t know what you don’t know. Only then can you accept what you don’t know, correct it, and keep advancing. “We have people that get a little full of themselves because they’ve had some success, but then they stumble because they stopped investing in learning and growth.” Her second advice is “Don’t let people tell you ‘No’. Don’t let people look at your background, your experience or your education, and say ‘you can’t be in this field’. Sometimes you must just keep going and prove you can be the person you want to be. But I say again, the only way you can do this is to be willing to continue learning every day.” Future threats Apart from advice – which helps us understand how current leaders have reached their position (advice received) and what they have learned (advice given), it is informative to know what cybersecurity threats they see coming. Although there is always a bias toward their current position, this doesn’t lessen the value. Russinovich sees two major areas. “The primary threats are nation state actors and artificial intelligence,” he suggests. “We see nation state actors boldly attacking corporations, such as Microsoft, to get at their customers. I don’t see that trend ending anytime soon.” His second concern is artificial intelligence. “AI is becoming more and more part of anything that you do with cybersecurity, whether it’s attack or defense. Attackers will be leveraging AI to probe systems, and to attack systems in an automated manner that wasn’t possible before.” Johnson doesn’t disagree with this micro view of threats but suggests the macro overview will remain largely similar as today. “I don’t think the threat landscape evolves all that much,” she says. “It continues to be financial attacks such as ransomware and BEC. It continues to be nation states, largely for either espionage or intelligence gathering.” Her view is that the motive, intent, and target of different cyber adversaries doesn’t change – only the details of how attacks are engineered. An example can be seen with adversarial AI. It could help detect vulnerabilities, craft new malware, improve social engineering, and automate attacks. It may speed, improve and scale the attacks, but financially motivated and nation state adversaries already use vulnerabilities, malware and social engineering. How to develop an AWS Security Hub POC
Optimize security operations through an AWS Security Hub POC April 27, 2026: This post was first published in September 2025 when the enhanced AWS Security Hub was in public preview. It has since been updated to reflect the general availability of Security Hub. This revision also provides a more detailed, step-by-step framework for planning your POC. AWS Security Hub prioritizes your critical security issues and helps you respond at scale to protect your environment. The service sharpens findings through aggregation, correlation, and enrichment of AWS native security signals into actionable insights, enabling faster and more efficient response times. You can use these capabilities to gain visibility across your cloud environment through centralized management in a unified cloud security solution. Security Hub creates a cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) and through the AWS free trial, you can create a comprehensive proof of concept (POC) evaluation without significant upfront investment in time or resources. In this blog post, we guide you through planning and implementation POC for Security Hub to assess the implementation, functionality, cost estimate, and value of Security Hub in your environment. We walk you through the following steps: Understand the value of Security Hub Determine success criteria for the POC Define Security Hub configuration Prepare for deployment Enable Security Hub Validate deployment Understand the value of Security Hub Figure 1 provides a visualization of how Security Hub unifies signals from multiple AWS security services, partner solutions capabilities. The signals, which are ingested by Security Hub from multiple AWS security services and curated partner solutions include: Threats: Amazon GuardDuty findings Vulnerabilities: Amazon Inspector vulnerability findings Controls: AWS Security Hub CSPM findings Configurations: Resource inventory Network exposures: Amazon Inspector network reachability findings Sensitive data: Amazon Macie findings Extended Plan: Curated partner solutions At its core, Security Hub provides four key capabilities in one unified solution: Unified security operations: Security Hub delivers a unified security operations experience, bringing your security signals into a single consolidated view and avoiding the need to switch between multiple security tools. This provides comprehensive visibility across your entire estate, including AWS, multi-cloud, and on-premises, so your security teams can efficiently detect, prioritize, and respond to potential security risks. Intelligent prioritization helps focus on what matters most: Security Hub helps you identify and prioritize critical security risks that might be missed when viewing findings in isolation. Security findings are correlated by analyzing resource relationships and signals from AWS security services and capabilities. Actionable insights guide security teams on next steps: Gain actionable insights through advanced analytics to transform correlated findings into clear, prioritized insights that highlight the most critical security risks in your environment. You can quickly understand potential impacts, visualize relationships, and identify which security issues pose the greatest risk to critical resources. Streamlined security response and automation capabilities: Security Hub enhances your security operations by enabling streamlined response capabilities. It seamlessly integrates with your existing ticketing systems to help facilitate efficient incident management. With this integrated approach your security team can: Investigate critical risks that need immediate attention from a single pane of glass Monitor security trends and attack surface across your environments Fix what really matters across the entire attack chain and path Automate responses to streamline remediation Understand the Open Cybersecurity Schema Framework Security Hub uses the Open Cybersecurity Schema Framework (OCSF) to help standardize security data and analysis and enable better integration between security tools. This standardization helps simplify how security findings are structured and analyzed across your environment. This standardized data model enables seamless integration and data exchange across your security tooling, providing normalized and consistent data formats. When implementing your Security Hub POC, make sure that you’re familiar with the OCSF specifications Security Hub uses. Additionally, confirm that any analytics or security information and event management (SIEM) tools you plan to integrate with support the OCSF data format to maximize the value of the consolidated security insights provided by Security Hub. Determine success criteria Establishing success criteria helps benchmark the outcomes of the POC with the goals of the business. Some example criteria and key performance indicators (KPI) include: Alert consolidation metrics: Determine what resources you’re currently using to correlate security events and signals to understand their relationship. Review the process and note if it’s completed outside of AWS or through a SIEM. By setting a benchmark to reduce correlation overhead you can significantly improve efficiency and accelerate security investigations and posture improvement. Response time improvements: Reducing your time to detect, investigate, and resolve security events and improve security posture is essential to streamlined security operations. Security Hub provides visualizations for potential attack paths that adversaries could use to exploit resources and helps assess the potential blast radius. - Reduced mean time to detect (MTTD) security incidents. - Reduced mean time to response (MTTR) for critical findings. - Reduced time to identify potentially affected resources in blast radius. - Increased accuracy of attack path analysis. - Number of controls implemented based on attack path insights (post investigation). Automation capabilities: Having response playbooks as part of your incident management and response plan helps ensure comprehensive investigations lead to improved security posture. Review your automation capabilities to see if portions of or entire playbooks can be automated. - Potentially increased percentage of security findings automatically routed to the correct teams by using Jira Cloud, ServiceNow, or a third-party tool. - Reduced average time from detection to ticket creation. Severity and risk classification: Review your organization’s inventory of assets to determine if it’s complete and if you can use telemetry to determine the severity level and associated risks. - Reduced time to identify critical resources and service coverage gaps affected by new vulnerabilities, threats, and misconfigurations. - Faster and more accurate severity label and risk calculation of findings. - Reduced time to identify service gap coverage. After establishing your success criteria, it’s essential to evaluate organizational readiness and potential constraints that might impact your POC implementation. Begin by conducting a comprehensive assessment of your current environment: Determine if the foundational security services (GuardDuty, Amazon Inspector, Security Hub CSPM, and Macie) are enabled across your accounts, and identify your critical workloads and if there are any excessive attack surfaces. Review your success criteria to make sure that your goals are realistic given your timeframe and potential constraints that are specific to your organization. For example: Do you have full control over the configuration of AWS services that are deployed in an organization? Do you have resources that can dedicate time to implement and test? Is this time convenient for relevant stakeholders to evaluate the service? Maximize your POC value through service activation To get the most comprehensive evaluation of the capabilities of Security Hub, coordinate the activation of underlying security services to optimize the overlapping trial periods available at no additional cost. The following is a list of the underlying security services, and their free trial length: Security Hub: 30-day trial (essential plan capabilities) GuardDuty: 30-day trial (covers most protection plans except GuardDuty Malware Protection) Security Hub CSPM: 30-day trial Macie: 30-day trial Amazon Inspector: 15-day trial Consider enabling these services simultaneously so that you have at least two weeks of overlapping coverage to evaluate the full correlation and risk prioritization capabilities of Security Hub across each service. Optionally, if you want to conduct a POC with minimal configuration because of limitations, you can enable only Security Hub CSPM and Amazon Inspector during the initial POC phase to properly assess the results and data. Note: Document your activation dates and trial expiration dates carefully. Create calendar reminders for trial end dates and schedule your key POC evaluation milestones to occur while services are active. This will help make sure that you can thoroughly assess the unified security operations capabilities of Security Hub when services are running at full capacity. If you already have one or more of these underlying services enabled, you can proceed to enable the new Security Hub. To fully use the new Security Hub capabilities, particularly the exposure findings feature, specific service dependencies must be met, both Security Hub CSPM and Amazon Inspector are essential because they provide the telemetry needed for the Security Hub correlation engine and exposure findings. The combination enables Security Hub to deliver comprehensive risk analysis and prioritization by correlating configuration risks with runtime vulnerabilities. If you have other security services already enabled (such as GuardDuty or Macie), you can maintain these existing services while enabling Security Hub, and it will automatically begin incorporating their findings into its consolidated view, enhancing your overall security posture visualization. Define your Security Hub configuration After your success criteria have been established, you’re ready to plan your configuration. Some important decisions include: Select a delegated administrator: From the AWS Organizations management account, you can set a delegated administrator for your organization. As a best practice, we recommend using the same delegated administrator across security services for consistent governance and according to our AWS Security Reference Architecture (AWS SRA). Select accounts in scope: Define accounts you want to have Security Hub enabled for. Define AWS Regions: Determine Regional restrictions or considerations. Determine AWS service integrations: In addition to the core security capabilities of posture management and vulnerability management, Security Hub integrates signals from other AWS security services such as GuardDuty and Macie. Define third-party integrations: - For ticketing, Security Hub integrates with popular service management systems such as Atlassian’s Jira Service Management Cloud and ServiceNow. - Partners who already support or intend to support the OCSF schema to receive findings from Security Hub include companies such as Arctic Wolf, CrowdStrike, DataBee, Datadog, DTEX Systems, Dynatrace, Fortinet, IBM, Netskope, Orca Security, Palo Alto Neworks, Rapid7, Securonix, SentinelOne, Sophos, Splunk, Sumo Logic, Tines, Trellix, Wiz, and Zscaler. - Service partners such as Accenture, Caylent, Deloitte, IBM, and Optiv can help you adopt Security Hub and the OCSF schema. Use the Security Hub cost estimator: Use the Security Hub Cost Estimation Tool for a pre-enablement cost estimate based on your current spend on Amazon Inspector, Security Hub CSPM, and GuardDuty. Prepare for deployment After determining your success criteria and Security Hub configuration, identify stakeholders, desired state, and timeframe. Prepare for deployment by completing: Project plan and timeline: Develop a project plan with defined success criteria, scope boundaries, key milestones, and realistic implementation timelines. Suggested timeline of events: - Before enablement: - Validate core security service configuration for GuardDuty, Amazon Inspector, Security Hub CSPM, and Macie - Request approvals for free trial from appropriate stakeholders - Day 0 – Enable the service, become comfortable with the Security Hub layout and begin training security personnel - Week 1 – Validate desired coverage of threat detection, vulnerability management, and posture management across accounts and Regions - Week 2 – Connect to IT service management (ITSM) tools and begin creating automations for critical workloads and resources - Week 3 – Execute a tabletop exercise in response to a selected exposure finding - Week 4 – Analyze trends of threats and exposures from day 1 through week 4 Before enablement: Identify stakeholders: Identify CISO, information security teams, SOC personnel, incident response teams, security engineers, finance, legal, compliance, external MSSPs, and business unit representatives. Develop a RACI matric: Create a detailed RACI chart defining roles and responsibilities across the incident response lifecycle, facilitating accountability and proper communication channels. Configure management account access: Secure authorization to delegate administrative access. For more information, see Permissions required to designate a delegated Security Hub administrator account. Set up IAM roles and permissions: Use AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) roles to implement role-based access controls aligned with the RACI chart, including case management, escalation, and read-only roles using AWS managed policies. For more information, see AWS Managed Policies Enable Security Hub AWS security services integrate with AWS Organizations to help you centrally manage Security Hub. If you haven’t already done so, enable Security Hub CSPM and Amazon Inspector at a minimum. Also enable any other AWS security services that you want to integrate with Security Hub. Enable Security Hub for your organization from the organization management account. If setting a delegated administrator for Security Hub, see Setting a delegated administrator account in Security Hub from the management account. Note: As a best practice, we recommend using the same delegated administrator across security services for consistent governance. Sign in to the delegated administrator with an IAM policy that gives you permission to enable and disable member accounts. With this policy, you will have granular control to decide what Regions you want enabled. Configure Security Hub plans for deployment. Security Hub comes with the Essentials, Threat Analytics, and Extended plans. Configure third-party integrations to create incidents or issues for Security Hub findings. Note: After you enable Security Hub, exposure findings in your environment are created and analyzed immediately. However, it can take up to 6 hours to receive an exposure finding for a resource. Validate deployment The final step is to confirm that Security Hub is configured correctly and to evaluate the solution against your success criteria. Validate policy: Verify that you have the correct permissions to manage member accounts and Regional restrictions are configured correctly. Validate integrations: Verify that tickets with ServiceNow or Jira Cloud are working correctly by signing in to the AWS Management Console for Security hub and choosing Inventory in the navigation pane. Select Findings and verify there is a ticket ID in your finding. Assess success criteria: Determine if you achieved the success criteria that you defined at the beginning of the project. Conclusion In this post, we showed you how to plan and implement an effective Security Hub POC. You learned how to do so through phases, including defining success criteria, configuring Security Hub, and validating that Security Hub meets your business needs. Take advantage of the trial periods to maximize your testing window without incurring significant costs. Throughout the POC, maintain focus on your predefined success criteria while remaining open to unexpected benefits or challenges that might arise. Maintain open communication with your AWS account team to address any questions or concerns to help you get the most out of your Security Hub POC experience. Deepfake detectors are slowly coming of age, at a time of dire need
DEF CON While AI was on everyone's lips in Las Vegas this week at the trio of security conferences in Sin City – BSides, Black Hat, AND DEF CON – there were a lot of people using the F-word too: fraud. The plummeting cost of using AI, coupled with the increasing sophistication of deepfakes and electronic communications becoming the norm, means that we're likely facing a massive amount of machine-learning mayhem. Deloitte estimates deepfake fraud will cost the US up to $40 billion by 2027, but everyone we've spoken to thinks that's an underestimation. Sam Altman's comment last month that "AI has fully defeated most of the ways that people authenticate currently, other than passwords," has ruffled some feathers in the security industry, with various vendors selling software that they claim does just that. But others are more cautious about its capabilities. Karthik Tadinada, who spent over a decade monitoring fraud for the UK's biggest banks when he worked at Featurespace, said that the anti-deepfake detection technology he has encountered manages about a 90 percent accuracy rate for spotting crime and eliminating false positives. That may sound good but it really shows the scale of the problem for the future. "The economics of people generating these things versus what you can detect and deal with, well actually that 10 percent is still big enough for profit," said Tadinada, who notes the costs of generating ID are only going to fall further. Video impersonation predates AI, and Tadinada recounted cases where security teams had spotted fakers in high-quality silicone masks, but said that machine learning has turbocharged this. He and fellow speaker Martyn Higson, who also is ex-Featurespace, demonstrated the easy overlay of the face of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Higson's body and a pretty good mimicry of his voice, all just using a MacBook Pro. This wasn't good enough to fool anti-scanning technology – AI tends to make the jowls more puffy and stiffen up the appearance of human faces – but it would certainly be good enough for propaganda or misinformation. This was demonstrated this week when journalist Chris Cuomo posted a deepfake video of US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) apparently accusing actress Sydney Sweeney of "Nazi propaganda," before pulling it and apologizing. Mike Raggo, the red team leader for media monitoring biz Silent Signals, agreed, pointing out that the quality of video fakes has improved drastically. But new techniques were going mainstream that might detect such fakes more easily. He does have skin in the game. Silent Signals developed a free Python-based tool, dubbed Fake Image Forensic Examiner v1.1, for the launch of GPT-5 by OpenAI last week. This will take an uploaded video and sample frames one at a time to look for manipulation, such as blurring on the edges of objects in the video, comparing the first, last, and middle frames for background anomalies. In addition, examining the metadata is absolutely key. Video manipulation tools, both commercial and open source, typically leave traces of code in the metadata, and a good detection engine must have the ability to perform such searches. Paint me a picture All three speakers agreed that images are probably the most worrying method for fraudsters to use, not only because of the ease with which they are being created, but also the increasing reliance businesses are placing on them. Tadinada's experiences in the banking sector made him particularly concerned about manipulated images being used in large-scale fraud. The COVID lockdown made people less willing to do banking in person and some financial institutions plunged into electronic records without considering the possibilities for fraud. For example, to open a bank account in the UK, you'll need to show documents such as a valid ID and a recent utility bill. Both are easily forged, as he demonstrated on stage, and can be difficult to spot electronically. Raggo agreed, particularly after visiting those announcing deepfake detection tools this week, but said there are some promising areas of deepfake spotting in evidence. "I saw a couple of vendors at Black Hat," Raggo told The Register. "I personally wouldn't comment on them until I had a chance to actually test them properly but from what I saw and some of the demos that were going on, they looked interesting." Whichever tool people use, there are key things that it must do, Raggo argued, starting with metadata analysis. The metadata generated by AI, for example, usually lacks key code such as its International Color Consortium (ICC) profile, showing the color balance used and there is often vendor-specific metadata, such as Google's habit of embedding "Google Inc" in the metadata of all Android images. Edge analysis is also key, he suggested. This involves investigating the edges of objects in the picture to examine for blurring or inconsistencies in their brightness. Pixel variance – the amount by which colors in an object vary – can also be used to spot manipulation. Going by the voice Such techniques aren't as useful in spotting voice deepfakes, however, and these kinds of vocal attacks are on the rise. In May the FBI warned that a fraud campaign using AI-generated voices of US politicians was being used to trick people into handing over access to government systems from which financial information could be extracted. But the FBI's advice to counter this was non-technical – telling users they should verify the source separately and listen for any inconsistencies in vocabulary or accent, while acknowledging that "AI-generated content has advanced to the point that it is often difficult to identify." It's not the only American federal agency that is worried about the spread of voice cloning. Last year the Federal Trade Commission sponsored a year-long competition to detect AI-generated voices, but was only paying a measly $35,000 in prize money. There are perfectly legitimate uses for such voice cloning technologies, such as for transcription, adding voice dubbing in media, and adding speech capabilities to bots in call centers. Microsoft has it as a function of Azure producing watermarked clone outputs (although these are far from perfect) and when The Register tested a voice generator from Silicon Valley startup Zyphra, the results were disturbingly good. Such technology, however, can also be a huge help to fraudsters. If someone uses a recorded voice sample it is possible to generate a clone without the subject's knowledge and the longer the audio sample, the better the clone is likely to be. A study by the non-profit publication Consumer Reports into six companies offering voice cloning services found two-thirds of them made little attempt to stop the abuse of their applications – users simply had to tick a box to say that they had a legal right to clone the voice sample. Only one of the companies tested, Resemble AI, actually required a real-time audio clip to use the service, although testers did manage to fool it some of the time with recorded audio. However, the results using this third-party audio were not as accurate due to sound issues. Many voice-cloning businesses have also started adding deepfake detection to their product portfolios, including Resemble. CEO Zohaib Ahmed told The Register that the data cloning companies have in their servers can generate valuable fake-spotting tools. "We've got a large database of real and cloned voices and comparing and contrasting them yields some valuable insights," he said. "We've identified a series of artifacts, some undetectable to the human ear, that make spotting fakes easier." The sanity test and the rise of the GANs As we've seen in the traditional security sphere, there's no 100 percent technological fix for spotting malware and hacking, and so it is for deepfakes. Just as you can't stop an absent-minded human from clicking on a malware-laden file, so too we can't expect people never to be fooled by deepfakes. "You've got to have a sense of precaution," red team leader at Sophos Eric Escobar told The Register. "Verification is absolutely key, particularly if money is involved. Ask yourself 'Is this in character?' and then check if you're at all uncertain." This is particularly relevant to the finance industry, Tadinada suggested. The use of deepfake scanning technology is all well and good, but financial transactions also need to be monitored as an indication of their use, as is the case with other types of fraud. The use of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to improve deepfakes is something that worried everyone we spoke to. GANs use two AI engines, a generator and a responder to make fake output more convincing. The generator creates media, the responder tries to spot manufactured content, and the two continue this process to improve the realism of the output. The results aren't perfect, and the process can currently leave tell-tale signatures in the deepfake's metadata, Raggo noted. But the technology promises to produce ever-more realistic results and will lead to fraudsters having more success. ®

Ciascun account supporta fino a 10 dispositivi connessi simultaneamente. Ecco i consigli chiave: 1. 9.
