Scans for "adminer", (Wed, Mar 18th)
A very popular target of attackers scanning our honeypots is "phpmyadmin". phpMyAdmin is a script first released in the late 90s, before many security concepts had been discovered. It's rich history of vulnerabilities made it a favorite target. Its alternative, "adminer", began appearing about a decade later (https://www.adminer.org). One of its main "selling" points was simplicity. Adminer is just a single PHP file. It requires no configuration. Copy it to your server, and you are ready to go. "adminer" has a much better security record and claims to prioritize security in its development. So how does it deal with configurations for database connection parameters? The simple answer: It does not. Instead of using its own authentication or access control, Adminer simply asks the user to enter the SQL username and password they want to use to connect to the database. This is certainly not a terrible idea. Let the database deal with it! SQL databases have robust access controls, so there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Not having to store database credentials in a secrets file also removes several security headaches. But... these credentials are, of course, still subject to brute-forcing. Adminer thought about that, and only allows 30 login attempts in 30 minutes. One may argue that this is "generous", but they thought about it. The main weakness likely represents users using weak passwords and relying on SQL authentication; there is no easy way to implement two-factor authentication. Adminer mitigates some of these issues with security plugins that implement OTP protection and other security features. This likely explains why attackers are scanning for it, and they have been scanning quite aggressively lately: The increase in the number of URLs scanned is noteworthy. In phpMyAdmin scans, attackers often attempt to find obfuscated URLs used to host phpMyAdmin, such as "/pma/". For Adminer, attackers are scanning for different versions of the file. The filename released by Adminer includes the version number and the language or database type. For example, "adminer-5.4.2-mysql-en.php" is the English version for MySQL. In short: Do not forget to read the security advice provided by Adminer, and you probably do not want to open Adminer to the internet. -- Johannes B. New "Cavalry Werewolf" Attack Hits Russian Agencies with FoalShell and StallionRAT
A threat actor that's known to share overlaps with a hacking group called YoroTrooper has been observed targeting the Russian public sector with malware families such as FoalShell and StallionRAT. Cybersecurity vendor BI.ZONE is tracking the activity under the moniker Cavalry Werewolf. It's also assessed to have commonalities with clusters tracked as SturgeonPhisher, Silent Lynx, Comrade Saiga, ShadowSilk, and Tomiris. "In order to gain initial access, the attackers sent out targeted phishing emails disguising them as official correspondence from Kyrgyz government officials," BI.ZONE said. "The main targets of the attacks were Russian state agencies, as well as energy, mining, and manufacturing enterprises." In August 2025, Group-IB revealed attacks mounted by ShadowSilk targeting government entities in Central Asia and Asia-Pacific (APAC), using reverse proxy tools and remote access trojans written in Python and subsequently ported to PowerShell. Cavalry Werewolf's ties to Tomiris are significant, not least because it further lends credence to a hypothesis that it's a Kazakhstan-affiliated threat actor. In a report late last year, Microsoft attributed the Tomiris backdoor to a Kazakhstan-based threat actor tracked as Storm-0473. The latest phishing attacks, observed between May and August 2025, involve sending email messages using fake email addresses that impersonate Kyrgyzstan government employees to distribute RAR archives that deliver FoalShell or StallionRAT. In at least one case, the threat actor is said to have compromised a legitimate email address associated with the Kyrgyz Republic's regulatory authority to send the messages. FoalShell is a lightweight reverse shell that appears in Go, C++, and C# versions, allowing the operators to run arbitrary commands using cmd.exe. StallionRAT is no different in that it is written in Go, PowerShell, and Python, and enables the attackers to execute arbitrary commands, load additional files, and exfiltrate collected data using a Telegram bot. Some of the commands supported by the bot include - /list, to receive a list of compromised hosts (DeviceID and computer name) connected to the command-and-control (C2) server /go [DeviceID] [command], to execute the given command using Invoke-Expression /upload [DeviceID], to upload a file to the victim's device Also executed on the compromised hosts are tools like ReverseSocks5Agent and ReverseSocks5, as well as commands to gather device information. The Russian cybersecurity vendor said it also uncovered various filenames in English and Arabic, suggesting that the targeting focus of Cavalry Werewolf may be broader in scope than previously assumed. "Cavalry Werewolf is actively experimenting with expanding its arsenal," BI.ZONE said. "This highlights the importance of having quick insights into the tools used by the cluster; otherwise, it would be impossible to maintain up-to-date measures to prevent and detect such attacks." The disclosure comes as the company disclosed that an analysis of publications on Telegram channels or underground forums by both financially motivated attackers and hacktivists over the past year has identified compromises of at least 500 companies in Russia, most of which spanned commerce, finance, education, and entertainment sectors. "In 86% of cases attackers published data stolen from compromised public‑facing web applications," it noted. "After gaining access to the public web application, the attackers installed gs‑netcat on the compromised server to ensure persistent access. Sometimes, the attackers would load additional web shells. They also used legitimate tools such as Adminer, phpMiniAdmin, and mysqldump to extract data from databases."

Organizations Warned of Exploited Sudo Vulnerability
The US cybersecurity agency CISA on Monday warned that a recently patched local privilege escalation vulnerability in Sudo has been exploited in the wild. A command-line utility for Linux and macOS, Sudo enables specified users to execute commands with root or administrator privileges without having to log in as superuser. A Windows implementation of the Sudo concept also exists, but it is not a fork or port of the Unix project. Because of the elevated temporary access that Sudo provides on Linux and macOS, only users configured in a sudoers file are permitted to execute commands via Sudo. The security defect flagged as exploited by CISA, tracked as CVE-2025-32463 (CVSS score of 9.3), allows any user to execute commands using Sudo, even if they are not configured in the sudoers file. Successful exploitation of the bug is only possible on systems that support /etc/nsswitch.conf, as it requires for the attacker to create an /etc/nsswitch.conf file under a user-specified root directory and then use the chroot feature to trick Sudo into loading it. The bug was introduced in 2023 in Sudo version 1.9.14 and was resolved in June with the release of Sudo version 1.9.17p1, which deprecated the chroot feature and removed the option to run commands with a user-selected root directory. CISA now warns that the CVE has been exploited in attacks, urging federal agencies to address it in their environments within the next three weeks, as mandated by the Binding Operational Directive (BOD) 22-01. There have been no reports on CVE-2025-32463 being exploited in the wild prior to CISA adding it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. However, proof-of-concept (PoC) exploits have been available since July. On Monday, the cybersecurity agency also added to KEV three recently disclosed vulnerabilities in Cisco IOS and IOS XE (CVE-2025-20352), Fortra GoAnywhere MFT (CVE-2025-10035), and Libraesva Email Security Gateway (CVE-2025-59689), all three marked as exploited last week. Additionally, CISA added to KEV CVE-2021-21311, a server-side request forgery (SSRF) flaw in Adminer, which was first flagged as exploited in 2022. While BOD 22-01 only applies to federal agencies, all organizations are advised to review CISA’s KEV list and apply the recommended mitigations for the vulnerabilities it describes. CISA Sounds Alarm on Critical Sudo Flaw Actively Exploited in Linux and Unix Systems
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on Monday added a critical security flaw impacting the Sudo command-line utility for Linux and Unix-like operating systems to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, citing evidence of active exploitation in the wild. The vulnerability in question is CVE-2025-32463 (CVSS score: 9.3), which affects Sudo versions prior to 1.9.17p1. It was disclosed by Stratascale researcher Rich Mirch back in July 2025. "Sudo contains an inclusion of functionality from an untrusted control sphere vulnerability," CISA said. "This vulnerability could allow a local attacker to leverage sudo's -R (--chroot) option to run arbitrary commands as root, even if they are not listed in the sudoers file." It's currently not known how the shortcoming is being exploited in real-world attacks, and who may be behind such efforts. Also added to the KEV catalog are four other flaws - CVE-2021-21311 - Adminer contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability that, when exploited, allows a remote attacker to obtain potentially sensitive information. (Disclosed as exploited by Google Mandiant in May 2022 by a threat actor called UNC2903 to target AWS IMDS setups) CVE-2025-20352 - Cisco IOS and IOS XE contain a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) subsystem that could allow for denial of service or remote code execution. (Disclosed as exploited by Cisco last week) CVE-2025-10035 - Fortra GoAnywhere MFT contains a deserialization of untrusted data vulnerability that allows an actor with a validly forged license response signature to deserialize an arbitrary actor-controlled object, possibly leading to command injection. (Disclosed as exploited by watchTowr Labs last week) CVE-2025-59689 - Libraesva Email Security Gateway (ESG) contains a command injection vulnerability that allows command injection via a compressed email attachment. (Disclosed as exploited by Libraesva last week) In light of active exploitation, Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies relying on the affected products are advised to apply the necessary mitigations by October 20, 2025, to secure their networks.
